Planet with landing icons

Hi,
As I travel through a system I see some planet with an icon next to the name and other planets without. I assume that this means you can land on these planets. Unfortunately, I have been to several of these planets with the icon and there is nothing there. It is a waste of time going to a planet and finding out that you just wasted 10 minutes landing on a barren planet. Is there something you can do to fix this? It woiuld be nice if all of the planet with this icon actually had a base you could land at and conduct some business.
Thanks
Mark

You do realise that all the planets and moons with bases show those bases in planet view mode, and also that there are landable planets across the galaxy, would you really expect bases on every one of several hundred billion bodies across the galaxy? Oh by the way, did you look for alien ruins, alien life forms and vulcanism on any of those barren planets?

The bases should be listed in the left-hand navigation panel under each such planet/moon.

Landable objects without bases are still useful for finding points of interest or search and 'mining' surface elements. I'd still like to see which ones are landable.

In the System Map there's a blue marker on landables, and there are three upward vertical marks to show those with a base. Not all bases can be docked at. But in the Nav Panel there are two slightly different bases icons to show which you can dock at.

I don't care that all planets are not inhabited. I am talking about the ones in navigation that have an icon next to the name. I said that I assume that they have at least one base on them. I don't look for alien ruins, I have never seen them and don't know where to look for them. Life forms and vulcanism is something I know nothing about. So I don't look for those either.

Markus54: When I am in a system I hit 1 to go to navigation. The panel is split. On the right hand side of that particular panel is the name of planets and starports. Next to the name of the planet might be an icon. The icon looks like a landing platform. I assume that is what it is. I have gone to some of these planet with the platforms by clicking the space bar and locking the destination in. I travel to that planet. Drop out of orbital cruise into glide. As I approach the end of the glide I go to the left hand panel again. This time tabbing over to contacts. It says no contacts in range?

Markus54: I don't do any mining.

Markus54: I have used the system map several times and have not ever seen what you are talking about. It wasn't until last week a player showed me you to use the system map to select a destination within the system.

Not all bases can be docked at.
I discovered this. They maybe military bases with some top secret stuff going on. I move on when this happens.

But in the Nav Panel there are two slightly different bases icons to show which you can dock at.
I have only seen one type of icon. They must be alike to be noticeable.

I posted within the quotes. And that's how I see it.

Here's what I mean by icons. The first is an example of planetary bodies from the System Map. The ones with blue semi-circles are landable. So planet four is not landable at all. The three blue vertical lines on planets two and three indicate there will be ground installations - but no indication if you can dock at them. The simple blue semi-circle with no blue vertical lines on planet one means it is landable but there are no formal ground installations and nothing to be docked at.

Also from the SysMap, but can be found from the left hand cockpit Nav Panel (your key #1 sounds about right), here's a sample look (from Lave) of ground installations. There are five on Lave 2. Installations #1 and #3 (Goldstein & McKee's) cannot be docked at. Installations #2, #4 and #5 (Chern, Watts & Navigator) CAN be docked at. I hope you can see the difference in the small icons against each installation. The same icon type shows up in the Nav Panel.

Even an installation that you can't dock at can still be visited, but may have perimeter security. Just land nearby on the surface (descend slowly, landing gear down, and look for a flatish spot and wait for the landing marker on the radar to turn blue). Then you can jump in your SRV and drive around the installation - sometimes missions might be linked to visiting such a place. But there's probably not much point visiting without a mission. And many have perimeter security to keep you away (or be shot at)!.

I hope that better explains the blue icons on the SysMap to show landable/non-landable bodies, and also the different icons for dockable/non-dockable installations for both SysMap and NavPanel.

Yes, there are still planets/moons that can be landed, but which have no dockable installations, but that's for other types of gameplay that don't seem to interest you currently, and that's fine. Personally, I like to go off exploring 'empty' moons looking for Elements and also points of interest, and sometimes for a cool view if a planet/moon has rings, or there is a nearby other body or star.

Safe travels, CMDR.

Johnny Cyclops explains it very well.

I would like to add that you can find all kinds of stuff on planets, even if they have no planetary bases.
Obviously you can find mats on the surface, but also little unregistered bases, guarded and unguarded mining installations, crashed ships, cargo containers and even Thargoid related stuff if you are lucky.
