Just leaving this here... 😁

What do you think about that list?

it's interesting but now outdated by two DLC. Also I'm surprised the meerkat fared so poorly as I see them on almost every sizeable want list, but I could be biased.

The obvious observation was already mentioned - it's outdated

You'll need more info to conclude this survey was accurate enough.
Don't think that would be an accurate observation from this forum.
And I've seen a discussion on reddit: but if the first one makes a good choice of animals - people tend to copy from that list.

I don't know if this is the case (reddit at least not) but sending in your lists when you don't know the choices from other players - really helps getting an objective view.

Since it's not official and Frontier probably wouldn't even look at it, it's not that interesting to me personally. Plus, I don't know how this data was collected. I have some doubts about it.

Strange although the jaguar was definitely wanted by the community I’ve never thought of it as the most wanted. From what I’ve seen the Penguin is or at least was the number one animal. I’ve also seen the gibbon and meerkat as heavily requested also.

I just thought that someone made a lot of interesting work doing that list.
I’d be really interested in taking part in making that kind of list here on forum and really curies about the results.
what do you think?

I believe someone has tried already. It was took down as I believe it violated forum rules. You could try Reddit tho. Although this list was outdated it isn’t very representative of what I’ve seen on these forums. For example on here the capybara was a major disappointment not being in the SA pack and still is heavily requested by many.

Same here. And the platypus is just a weird one. Even in the NZfanatic's post about "How would you do DLC" the dingo was a more popular choice.
And the Kiwi, on this forum only 1-2 people mentioned it multiple times but I highly doubt a lot of people put this on their list.

I just thought that someone made a lot of interesting work doing that list.
I somewhat doubt the "several thousand responses".
Really difficult to believe that even a thousand responded to this on reddit. (and not able to find this on reddit either)
There are a lot of Oceania animals on this - so I'm a bit curious which community (region) we are talking about.
While some on this list look accurate, some species are rarely mentioned at all (my experiences with reddit/discord).

Could easily be a personal list disguises as an "survey". Seen a youtuber claiming something similar, really difficult to believe if you only have 5k-10k followers.

Just my two cents one why the variation in numbers and Jaguar receiving 100% of the vote, and I could be completely wrong (would really need more info on the poll to say with more certainty).

It seems that it was broken down by species type/ the Cladisitic category. So for the rodent category, almost 80 percent picked the Capybara and the other 20% chose other rodents they would like in place of. However, for the Felid category, with so many popular large cats already in place, Jaguar was an easy choice for 100% of respondents. It does not mean this animal is more preferred over the others on this list, just that it garnered more responses for its respective category.

There was a poll like this posted some time back where the first respondents discredited the OP because the first animal on the list was an animal very few had even spoken of, but it was just because it won a fairly uncommon category. It's not indicative of overall want, just want for the category the poll's creator has constructed. So a bit reliable for a small category, but quite unreliable for the entire Animal Kingdom.

Edit: Another strange thing about the polls are the "Most Wanted" animals differ from the continent images. For example, NA's top 3 were Cougar, Raccoon, Beaver, but in the "Most Wanted" list, the most requested animals that live in NA are Moose, Cougar, Otter, Beaver, Alligator, Armadillo, Wolverine, Badger, Raccoon, White Tail Deer, so the polls do not really even match up with each other. Same can be said for other continent's big three and the Most Wanted poll.

Yes, you are right. And what's more: A survey of this forum wouldn't be accurate, because not everybody is taking part in this discussion. I (for one) don't, because I see no sense in it. Who would be interested in my personal wishlist? Each of us has her or his own most loved animals. There will be intersections, ok, but why on earth should we discuss each others lists? There are no arguments for "my wishlist is better than yours". And Frontier will decide on their own, what animals will go into an update/DLC.

A real poll by Frontier would be something I would join in, though.

Hi there! I'm the person who made this, I'll gladly give some context if you like. This thread was sent to me on Discord, had to make a forum account to post just now. It was posted to reddit and received a total of 1700 responses, so the several thousands was a little bit of a stretch. The survey itself was conducted in December through January, and what's left out in the pictures here is that the results were weighted. Here's the full imgur thread. Note the typos on there, I am aware of them. For any more questions, just ask away. I have actually been contemplating doing another survey, so maybe your input might be of value.

The "most wanted by continent" part of the data is by far the most iffy, as my follow-up survey only received some 50-60 responses. Here, location/continent association was weighted as being more important than the actual place it was from.

Here's also the list of animals I included in the survey (hopefully this works the right way):

It was indeed based on loosely defined cladistically inspired categories / supercategories. Capybaras did not get 80% of the votes overall in the rodent category, but the way I did my data manipulation, which was partly flawed since I overcompensated some animals, ended up with Capybaras on top because although only some ~65-70% voted for more rodents, of those almost everyone also wanted the capybara. Animals with less than 50% of the votes in their respective categories were removed, and their votes redistributed (with less weight) to the remaining animals, based on what share of the total votes those animals then took up within the category. I hope that it makes sense, and although it is flawed, it was what I did - so hopefully that explains a bit. The redistribution only really makes sense if everyone has a limited amount of votes within each category, which they didn't. IIRC I explained a bit in the reddit thread, but otherwise feel free to ask away.

Which animals specifically did you expect to see more of? Any that were not included in the spoilered Animal List above?

Thank you for clarifying. Does give some more insight.
Don't think this will make the survey anymore useful imo..

Just going with the selection of flightless birds. (assuming this was the category)
Somali Ostriches
Emus
Cassowaries
Kiwis
Rheas
Penguins

It's basically the category Ratites (had to google that name) + penguins (but no distinction in this one).
At least name 2 species (Like King Penguin and Humboldt's Penguin)
We all know that most people won't pick the Somali Ostriches, because we already have Ostriches.
I'm ignoring the kakapo, flightless waterfowl and a few other flightless species to avoid a long discussion :p

Same goes with this one, don't know which category you've put them:
Malayan Tapir
Brazilian Tapir
Mountain Tapir

Even without voting/survey we all know who'll be the winner if it was just these 3.

I also mentioned the Dingo - but it's not on this list, but you did add a very unknown canine species for a lot of people: Dholes (never seen this on a wishlist)

Some choices are good and some choices are a bit poor. Basically directing someone towards an answer.
I don't think there is a proper balance in some categories.

Not saying I could do a better job :D , but I'd just leave it more open.

My selection of birds was horribly simplified, there's no debating that - my original idea was to really go all-in on birds, flightless or not, at a later stage, but it's a lot of work to set up the surveys and then fix the data afterwards. Secretary birds and pelicans were personal frontrunners. The idea behind keeping penguins kept behind the supercategory was actually to be in favour of the penguins - show the desire for penguins overall, but I appreciate your point!

As for the dingo, it's a feral dog according to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, hence why it wasn't included, same as there were no mustangs or feral hogs. I nonetheless appreciate the point! Surprisingly enough, though, Somali Ostriches were about as popular as the Rhea, yet both received only 1/4 the amount of votes that both cassowaries and emus did, not to mention penguins.

The tapirs were all included in the odd-toed ungulate category, same as horses, donkeys and rhinos. I'd also like to add that it was possible to respond with "Other" and add your own animal in every single question on specific animals/phenotypes. Strictly how would you fancy that it be more open? Simply have everyone write in what their favourite animal is? The problem is that quantification of any such thing is difficult, especially because of the amount of spelling errors, lack of specifics and more - even more work to do. In any case, what would you have expected to be at the top of the list then, and what would you have liked yourself since you seem don't seem strictly content with this one?

@JacobI no not really but as much as I like the idea of a moose based on what I’ve seen on various sites and forums the otter and meerkat would probably place above it. Maybe even the capybara? Like I said I hope we get a moose but I could live without it also. Now the otter to me anyway is a much more critical animal since it would more then likely elevate the level of the game considering underwater animations evolved. And the meerkat also a must in this game imo. Biased opinion perhaps but I’d definitely place them before the moose. I guess the yak and the wallaby seem oddly out of place too based on requests I’ve seen personally. Wallaby for me is hit or miss. And even tho I do notice a slight request jump for the yak it’s definitely not as popular as some placed below it. I like yaks it’s a cool animal in its own right but perhaps the most questionable placement of the whole list considering some of the highly popular animals I see below it.

Just wanted to add it would be pretty easy to get a rough estimate of a list from this site by looking in the wishlist section on this site. I myself made a thread of which animal you want most in game and to me the otter dominates the list. Seals, gibbons, orcas, penguins, and some others were very noticeable requests. I believe your list to be accurate from sites you visited and it’s definitely interesting but if you did this forum. I believe the results be very different.

That would be my preference - other. (didn't get that from your earlier comment)
Tbh, most times that one doesn't make the cut because people tend to choose what they are presented :D

I think different packs would be an option to have a more "open" options. I understand that you want to know which rodent is popular. But rodent species are not the most well known species in zoos. There are some obvious choices but in short: every choice has to have a similar appeal (at least when you give it as an option).
Instead of crocodilia, i would've gone with large reptiles (non-snakes) and try to make a 10 animal species list. (for some species it would be tricky to get 10 animals but for some easy)

Completely open could be an option as well. On this forum when people make wishlist with a theme - most times 3 out of 4 is on everyone's list. Australia wish lists were a great example of that one. And if you want you make a round 2 out of those options. Grammar mistakes happen but didn't see much mistakes with that.
But I understand you made a choice in this matter, which has it's benefits.

In any case, what would you have expected to be at the top of the list then, and what would you have liked yourself since you seem don't seem strictly content with this one?
Try to balance the species in a category - so basically a bit more research. I think the wishlist section of this forum would give some impression of what species they expect, at least that's 1 source. They don't give a top 5 or something. For Australia they mentioned up to max. 10 species. (pretty sure for Australia you would've mentioned the Quokka)
In some categories you've a extensive choice Bovids/Cevids but for primates less interesting. More macaques doesn't make the vote when you see a species name (I do understand why you did this)
Go for detail or go for species in general.

As for the dingo, it's a feral dog according to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, hence why it wasn't included, same as there were no mustangs or feral hogs
Okay, I understand. Personally still would've added it - because simply canids.
