Same here. And the platypus is just a weird one. Even in the NZfanatic's post about "How would you do DLC" the dingo was a more popular choice.Strange although the jaguar was definitely wanted by the community I’ve never thought of it as the most wanted. From what I’ve seen the Penguin is or at least was the number one animal. I’ve also seen the gibbon and meerkat as heavily requested also.
I somewhat doubt the "several thousand responses".I just thought that someone made a lot of interesting work doing that list.
I somewhat doubt the "several thousand responses".
Really difficult to believe that even a thousand responded to this on reddit. (and not able to find this on reddit either)
There are a lot of Oceania animals on this - so I'm a bit curious which community (region) we are talking about.
While some on this list look accurate, some species are rarely mentioned at all (my experiences with reddit/discord).
Could easily be a personal list disguises as an "survey". Seen a youtuber claiming something similar, really difficult to believe if you only have 5k-10k followers.
It was indeed based on loosely defined cladistically inspired categories / supercategories. Capybaras did not get 80% of the votes overall in the rodent category, but the way I did my data manipulation, which was partly flawed since I overcompensated some animals, ended up with Capybaras on top because although only some ~65-70% voted for more rodents, of those almost everyone also wanted the capybara. Animals with less than 50% of the votes in their respective categories were removed, and their votes redistributed (with less weight) to the remaining animals, based on what share of the total votes those animals then took up within the category. I hope that it makes sense, and although it is flawed, it was what I did - so hopefully that explains a bit. The redistribution only really makes sense if everyone has a limited amount of votes within each category, which they didn't. IIRC I explained a bit in the reddit thread, but otherwise feel free to ask away.Just my two cents one why the variation in numbers and Jaguar receiving 100% of the vote, and I could be completely wrong (would really need more info on the poll to say with more certainty).
It seems that it was broken down by species type/ the Cladisitic category. So for the rodent category, almost 80 percent picked the Capybara and the other 20% chose other rodents they would like in place of. However, for the Felid category, with so many popular large cats already in place, Jaguar was an easy choice for 100% of respondents. It does not mean this animal is more preferred over the others on this list, just that it garnered more responses for its respective category.
There was a poll like this posted some time back where the first respondents discredited the OP because the first animal on the list was an animal very few had even spoken of, but it was just because it won a fairly uncommon category. It's not indicative of overall want, just want for the category the poll's creator has constructed. So a bit reliable for a small category, but quite unreliable for the entire Animal Kingdom.
Which animals specifically did you expect to see more of? Any that were not included in the spoilered Animal List above?I believe someone has tried already. It was took down as I believe it violated forum rules. You could try Reddit tho. Although this list was outdated it isn’t very representative of what I’ve seen on these forums.
My selection of birds was horribly simplified, there's no debating that - my original idea was to really go all-in on birds, flightless or not, at a later stage, but it's a lot of work to set up the surveys and then fix the data afterwards. Secretary birds and pelicans were personal frontrunners. The idea behind keeping penguins kept behind the supercategory was actually to be in favour of the penguins - show the desire for penguins overall, but I appreciate your point!Thank you for clarifying. Does give some more insight.
Don't think this will make the survey anymore useful imo..
Just going with the selection of flightless birds. (assuming this was the category)
Somali Ostriches
Emus
Cassowaries
Kiwis
Rheas
Penguins
It's basically the category Ratites (had to google that name) + penguins (but no distinction in this one).
At least name 2 species (Like King Penguin and Humboldt's Penguin)
We all know that most people won't pick the Somali Ostriches, because we already have Ostriches.
I'm ignoring the kakapo, flightless waterfowl and a few other flightless species to avoid a long discussion![]()
That would be my preference - other. (didn't get that from your earlier comment)I'd also like to add that it was possible to respond with "Other" and add your own animal in every single question on specific animals/phenotypes. Strictly how would you fancy that it be more open?
Try to balance the species in a category - so basically a bit more research. I think the wishlist section of this forum would give some impression of what species they expect, at least that's 1 source. They don't give a top 5 or something. For Australia they mentioned up to max. 10 species. (pretty sure for Australia you would've mentioned the Quokka)In any case, what would you have expected to be at the top of the list then, and what would you have liked yourself since you seem don't seem strictly content with this one?
Okay, I understand. Personally still would've added it - because simply canids. As for the dingo, it's a feral dog according to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, hence why it wasn't included, same as there were no mustangs or feral hogs
