Planet Zoo Idea: Mediterranean DLC and free update

Hi fellow zookeepers and the Frontier team!

I wanted to share a concept that I've been thinking about that I feel that all sorts of players will love and use and also bridge a major gap in the game's selection of maps and biomes. A DLC and free update to add all sorts of exiting new things like maps, a biome, plants, animals and a new building theme to the game that will be from and inspired by the Mediterranean region.

Is this something that the Frontier team could create please? I was thinking of having a Mediterranean biome, plants, animals and building theme (with the last being maybe based on a single country in the Mediterranean region with a Greek/Ancient Greek style probably being the most desired by the community, or, preferably, a mix of countries!). For the new maps, I was thinking of two versions that are the beach/coast for every biome (especially the possible Mediterranean one, for the tundra and taiga biomes, I was thinking of having a frozen sea/parts of the sea be frozen): one version of these new beach maps has part of the sea, then part of the beach, and finally part of the land further in all being in the buildable area; and for the second, part of the sea, then part of the beach, and finally a vertical cliff that has part of the land further in, which will be at the top of it, all being in the buildable area.

To the Frontier team: if you do make this real, add other details maybe like new food and drink companies or education and a new career scenario, maybe have the new beach maps and minor additions be in the free update and have the other features, and your own that are big enough, in the DLC. To the community: please like this thread if you want to see these additions implemented into the game and also reply if you like my ideas and have more suggestions.

Thanks so much for reading! I’d love to hear what you think and your ideas for additions, and if the Frontier team ever adds or even just considers my ideas, I’d be absolutely thrilled.

Thank you all so much for checking out my Mediterranean and beach ideas so far, and a special thanks to Aramar who gave it a like, all of your support means a lot me! If you like the concept, please feel free to leave a like and share your thoughts and additions in the comments. Thanks again!

Sounds nice! What animals would you like to see in it? And what plants?
Thank you so much Annie_Konik for the complement and questions! The most important animals for me would be: a species of squirrel, hedgehog, dolphin (probably unlikely), osprey (again unlikely), and European bee-eaters (yet again unlikely). For plants, the most important for me would be: olive trees, lemon/citrus tree, and bougainvillea. I would greatly appreciate everyone else's suggestions. Thanks again Annie_Konik!

Squirrels and hedgehogs would be really cute! I think you are right about dolphin, osprey, and bee eaters being somewhat unlikely in the current version of the game, as we don't have fully marine animals and aviary birds yet. Maybe a Great Bustard would be a good bird option, as it wouldn't look bad just spending most of the time on the ground? What do you think?
For some bigger mammals, maybe adding a European Brown Bear could also work. However, it's a controversial choice, as we already have two subspecies of the brown bear in the game. I could imagine Mediterranean monk seals being added, but is it different enough from other seals to stand out?
Other animals that come to my mind: jackals, martens, and for the exhibit animals maybe an olm, or some lizard perhaps sheltopusik?

I like your ideas for plants! We already have olive trees, though, so you can cross that off the list. :) Maybe a pomegranate tree could be added too?

Thanks yet again for the comment (and reminding me about the olive trees 😂)! I also really like your suggestions. Does anyone else have anything as well?

I have another idea: for my suggested beach maps, since part of the sea will be in the buildable area, you should be able to customise its colour (like how you can with bodies of water that you place in the game right now). This could also apply to the sand and cliff.

How about yellow, orange, pink, and white honeysuckle variants, herbs like rosemary, and finally lavender (I know we have the Alpine Phacelia but lavender is still different in appearance). I also like the idea of the pomegranate tree (if Frontier could make it look different to apples 😂). Does anyone else have anything to add/suggest (not just about plants).

As a Mediterranean born and raised I have an obligation to chime in here 😁

I proposed Mediterranean pack before, but I won't lie, it lost a lot on appeal after Arid pack (and upcoming pack actually). Still, not a pack I wouldn't buy, but if we discount flying birds and marine animals it would have to rely on clones somewhat.

Big seller of course would be a pelican species, my preferred one - Dalmatian Pelican as the biggest of its kind, it ranges from Balkans to North Africa to East Asia and also a local bias since they nest in my homecountry. On top of that I like their drastic colors more than those od Great White Pelican, but the GW still remains an option.

Two "clones" from Morrocan Atlas mountain would be hard to skip in pack like this, Barbary Sheep and Barbary Ape. Barbary Sheep might not be so interesting after Bighorn inclusion, but alteast it's not a Mouflon (which would be my alternative). It also has its fans here in community. A lot of heavy lifting for Barbary Ape does the fact that their range extends to Iberia, but for me it's their tolerance for Temperate climate, which is not common for many monkeys in our game.

Next up, carnivorans, something Frontier won't be caught skipping on. Golden Jackal ranges all over eastern Mediterranean across three continents, and on top of that it would be very easy to make. But it would never be a popular pick, especially after inclusion of Coyote. Second one, for me personally, would be Egyptian Mongoose. There are bunch of options like Genets and Polecats, but Egyptian Mongoose is dear to my heart. Range is similar to Jackals, except it ranges further south into Africa. Main seller for me is its funny looks with hanging fur and lion like tail (and that they're introduced in my country (again)).

Final one only barely stretches into Mediterranean, but wouldn't be the first time for Frontier, so I'm including it, and that would be Rock Hyrax. It's cute and sellable, recently became somewhat of a meme, and has unique taxonomy that sets it apart from other similar small mammals.

For the exhibit slot there are bunch of choices. If I wanted to go locally I would pick European Horned Viper, Common Adder, Pond Turtle, Ocellated Lizard or Glass Lizard. But one other animal trumps them all for me and that's Common Chameleon. It's a quintessential Mediterranean reptile as it's distributed almost only along the coastal countries. It can be found in North Africa, Middle East and South Europe. And it's a Chameleon which is something we're missing in game still. I guess alternative pick could be Egyptian Cobra.

I don't know much about flora, so you'll have to excuse me there, but something like Carob Tree and/or Oleander would work.

There are a lot of really nice suggestions in this thread. I wanted to bring up the Barbary macaque and Egyptian cobra, but someone beat me to it xD
Other options I could see would be for exhibit the European asp, ladder snake and a wide range of athropods, though the ideal would be if we could include some fish or cephalopod (the greater weever, dusky grouper or common octopus for instance).
A plant I would really like to see, even though it has been introduced from Mexico, would be the Indian fig opuntia. Also, the stone pine.

Thank you Stressed Primate for the great suggestions as well! By the way, we already have the Indian fig opuntia in the game, it is just called the Prickly Pear Cactus.
