Planetary blue rings?

Are you talking about the orbital cruise bubble?

Or are you talking about the orbit lines?

Not just visual. I think they also represent gravitational force around them, the bigger the force, the bigger radius of the lines.

no, there is a dev quote out there that those lines are nothing but an idicator that there is a planet that you may miss because its just a few pixels in size while you move at a relative fraction of the speed of light.

According to the manual, the blue rings you see around planets while in SC are:

“Stellar bodies also display blue approach rings around them to help you gauge distance.”.

Good thing they failed to implement any kind of quantitative scale to ensure they would be completely useless for any practical application.

Actual quote from Dev Mike Evans from 2014 .......

"Those blue rings are just scaled up indicators of the planets radius. So the first one you see might be 1000 x bigger than the radius of the planet so when you approach it you can get a sense of getting closer as it grows in size (it's not actually moving or growing, it's just you getting closer). Once you get close enough it fades away and you see a ring that like 500 x bigger than the planet and so on. They're just there to show how you are approaching the planet when it's too small to see."

Certainly miss Mike's great posts !

Indeed :( Does he still work on ED? I certainly hope so. Because we have to thank him for both flight model and SRV....despite what you think about ED, those are two things that are designed with care and love.

edit: Google says he still is. Great! :D

I like the piloting and driving parts of ED, I am glad that freeform cruising made the cut. Not keen on the transitions/layers though alas, some tough design choices for sure.
