Planetary Features / Draw Distances

..Anyone else feel that planetary graphics have dropped off in terms of quality?

  • Draw distances seem reduced. Life forms now pop up jarringly a few hundred metres from the ship. It's making the whole Exobiology experience feel very dated and weary. Zooming along the planet surface is great fun, but these popups are disappointing continually.
  • General terrain features seem to have been scaled right down. Mostly it's flat texture-painted ground. Feels like something from long time ago.
  • This is running on 3080ti / 10900KF with settings listed below.
Video below for quick sample but here's some 2xframe excerpts:

there's more 0:32-0:41.

Full video (90 seconds)

On foot the terrain just looks like old school 2005 Battlefield 2 when I'd turn down graphics settings for easier enemy-spotting.

I'm open to considering my settings (always been rather careless about the detail),

Is it just me?
Have I screwed up settings?

The draw distance is very meh indeed, though it is obviously related to the speed of our ships. Games like GTA/CP also struggle a bit with it, and you dont drive 1000km/h there. As for the actual quality: it also looks very meh in your vid but I suspect it is partly due to the location you landed in: with the sun relatively high up the sky shadows will be largely absent and details will tend to get lost in the brightness. Take this photo for example, it looks like its from a 2005 computer game:

How does it look when you are in more dusk/dawn areas?

I thought that's just for me because I have to turn the settings all the way down. Wow, these screenshots really look horrible. Maybe I shouldn't buy a new PC after all.

Your res is poor and FSR makes it all worst.
This is not an FPS game - this is beauty game.
Ho can you see it in the 1080p (I guess) quality (that is real RES after FSR).
Also this is not the best planet to to show. :)

Apologies I don't follow, can you explain "res is poor and FSR makes it all worse"?

You can adjust LoD and screen/ render res independently in ED, so what is your point?

You can clearly see the effects of the FSR when you maximise the screenshots, even at Ultra Quality it's still too blurry in my opinion (and I'm not really sure if you need to use it with your hardware either).

This game is not nearly pretty enough to run so poorly.

He definitely do not need FSR.
Even me with RX 6700 XT playing 4K without FSR.

ah right ok - to be fair the screenshots seem to have a spot of compression going on.

ok, I just read this that's all.

so maybe I go to this?:

yes. FSR is for improving performance, and what they mean to say is that IF you use FSR you are best of using SMAA to mitigate loss of quality. If you just want best quality you should turn FSR off. If you still have a lot of performance, you can even set 'supersampling' to higher values but this might really tank performance.

To be honest, your screenshots looked like 1080p to me too, at your res it should look way sharper.

it's better and there are more rock here too. Draw distance still not great.
Draw distance is not going to improve on your end I am afraid, only FD can do something about it. With the FSR off and maybe some upsampling you'll be at the best there is.

OK, I'll turn on SS @ 1.5 and in coming days head back to the same spot and share findings. Great advice all. Thanks.

This is also because there is no volumetric atmosphere, dust or fog to hide the details in the distance. The popping is therefore much more visible.

I've been seeing something up with the Terrain objects for a while now. Yes, the detail seems poor but what REALLY bothers me is the crazy long pop in times for exobiology life. It's ridiculous now. When the game was first released 'out' of Alpha it was much better than it is now. Nowadays the area goes flat, you stop and hover, count to 10 slowly and THEN things start popping in. You can't do exobiology gameplay needing to stop every 100m and wait for 10 seconds. I have tried messing with all the settings I can think of and it doesn't seem to help at all.

I haven't noticed that, I still zoom across just under 100mps to scan for biology. I will test it again when I get a chance.
