Planetary Landings

hey all [smile]

ive very recently joined the community and im still contemplating buying this game

1 question, can you fly into planets atmospheres and land like you could in Frontier Elite II??

also are there space stations you can dock with?

Only planets without atmospheres (the bulk of planets in Elite) Probably won't be a while before we see atmospheric landings. There are surface ports on planet's ranging from a single port up to 4 or 5 that you can trade between.

All have large landing pads, many ports are buried in valleys between huge mountain ranges or deep within canyons, makes for some interesting approaches and stunning scenery at times.

There are so many things you can do now, if you like space flight. Sure there are limits, however the scope is huge, FD can't make every thing at day one. The atmospheric planets, and here i'm talking about earth likes, will take awhile to get right. We will probably see Mars like planets next year combined with walking around your ship.

The ship to ship combat is fun, and challenging, we hope the NPCS will get better in 2.1.

But, mostly they are ok now, if you don't push them too hard.

thanks 777Driver thats a shame, maybe something for them to add in the future

Yeah it's something the developers have said they really really want to do but it will take time, possibly as long as a few years yet.

I believe also on the list are volcanic planets, planets with life etc etc
I also heard a rumour they want to do something with gas giants but thats just a rumour at the moment :)

Planetary landings are huge though. In the currently no atmosphere landings you can land anywhere. That could be a base or any part of any planet without an atmosphere. Like this..

I doubt inhabited planets will be as liberal with landings but even so what's currently there is pretty impressive from my point of view.

First thing I did when horizons launched was land on Mercury a friend and I went to play in our Srvs to a place called The Caloris Basin. This is a 1500km crater with craters inside craters and is known as some of the roughest terrain in our solar system.

It was right there to be conquered IN GAME fully realised, if that doesn't tickle your space fancy TC then you may have to hold off until the rest is implemented.

As of now I'm having a real blast with horizons. Roll on the missions update and what not

Volcanic planets are said to be this season, Horizons.

When you see how good the rest looks you'll understand they'll want to get it right. The planets aren't something random, they're all worked out from first principles of the history of that system's formation - icy moons trapped in gas giants gravity wells are cracked and fissured, different types of landscape and levels of meteorite impacts etc.

The experience is much greater than Frontier - there was only a nod to it there really. Here you can land and go on attack missions, explore and mine anywhere there's no atmosphere and there is solid ground to land on. They'll add it, but realistic landscapes take much longer than fantasy crazy RNG stuff offered elsewhere - as do realistic weather patterns

Welcome to the forums! If you are on the forums you are ready to buy :) dont mind any negitivity you see on here, some of us are a bit restless waiting for 2.1 to release but thats a few weeks away so you wont have to wait long.

Best i've got for you is watch few youtube videos and see what you can do. yes you can land on moons, no you cannot land on planets with atmosphere.

Truth is i cannot from the goodness of my heart recommend wasting 60 bucks. Maybe 15.

This is totally down to the player not the game. There's not much that makes (in game) financial sense, well discounting Meta Alloys, about planetary landings but then I can spend hours blasting round canyons on a planet with good ravines. It makes zero imaginary credits but I don't care, it's still fun.

Best $60 I've spend, on the same level as DCS,IL-2, ArmA and other similar games.

What is that in the second picture? One spawned right next to a base in HIP 10716 when doing cut the power missions? I could shoot the purple things and they would explode. Thanks

Looks like a mining operation. If you shoot them then you should get metals fall out which you can scoop up.

EDIT - Ninja'd :D

These need to be scooped in the SRV correct?

I think you might be able to get them in a ship but it'll be way easier in the SRV. I think Frawd was scooping materials in his Sidey that the Rock Rats had harvested. Might be wrong about that though - I'll need to check.

EDIT - Yep should be scoopable in your ship - Frawd was having CMDR's in SRV's supply him with materials (shoot rocks) that he then scooped up. Pretty impressive all round really.
