Planetary Mapping Question?.

Although looking at it in the outfitting screen the DSS seems to be only one type, it seems to work differently depending on which ship it is installed on. I am on a long time exploration voyage in my fleet carrier, I left the bubble approx 18mths ago and the different suits with the different hand scanners came out after that. On arriving at SagX I bought the required suits and started looking for biologicals. I realised that sometimes landing my Corvette on a planet could be difficult due to size and so started using my Diamondback Explorer instead. This works very well and I have made several first footfalls etc.

In my Corvette when I mapped a planet I rarely took more than 5 probes ie North/South/West/East and Bullseye and very rarely had to move to the far side to scan. However I find in the Diamondback that now I almost always need that extra probe on the far side. At first I thought that the reason was the Corvette is much bigger but looking in my carriers outfitting dept it seems that the scanner is the same size/type on all my ships so it should work the same you would think.

Not sure whether I am just nit picking or not but is there a reason for this or am I doing something wrong?.

There are only two DSS modules available for all ships. One is the standard DSS, the other is pre-engineered. Both are the same size.

The pre-engineered one performs a little better (IIRC) than a fully engineered standard DSS.

That sounds like you have/get different levels of DSS engineering in different ships. If you have two DSSes, that's probably the reason, though I can't see from your question that you do, and it seems like you move one DSS between the ships?

Check the Modules table: you may see an entry like 'Detailed Surface Scanner (5)', where 5 indicates the level of extra engineering.

Thanks, that was it, I forgot to swap the engineered DSS module from my Python to the Explorer. The one in my Corvette, also engineered gives a boost of 28.6% while the one I just put into the Explorer from the Python gave 29.8% and it scans much better tonight.

Um, you don't have to "move to the other side" to scan - you can send a probe to the antipodean bullseye by aiming outward in any direction until it says "Miss", then come a little inward and fire.
