Planetary Mineral Scanner

Not had time to search properly but how about a mineral scanner that tells you what's on the planet.

Maybe make it a class 2 module that also works as a detailed surface scanner or even a class 3 module combining all scanners into 1 package. I just thought it'd be nice to scan planets from orbit for their synthesis resource composition.

I hope FD will add planetary mining for CMDRs as soon as possible and we will then need scanning methods to locate ore pockets too.
I hope locating ore pockets will require a combined use of a ship based scanner with an SRV scanner.
First we would locate a general area with our ship and then determine the exact location of the ore with our SRV.

In general I am surprised at the lack of good scanning mechanics in our ships when we explore a planet.
We don't even have a good surface radar in our ships to pinpoint surface structures.
I would love to have to buy software upgrades, or modifications for our scanners to enable this.
I would not want to waste a slot for every scanner type. In general ships lack the internal space for that.

Combo scanners I don't think will be added. They want to keep the low end ships well low. Like DB Explorer.

Now having a Mineral scanner for the Planets. That would be cool.

I think a detailed surface scanner should be able to handle this. Perhaps an Advanced Detailed Surface Scanner that costs more money could do the normal job of a DSS plus give finer details of surface POIs.

Came back from work to find a bunch of rep and wondered what had happened :p
Thanks for the support.

To be honest I'd like to see better material resources on odd planets like 4G+ worlds or tiny potatoes. I need a reason to go there, give me a scanner that prompts me to land on Achenar 3 in a glorious fireball that I can title it "Should have known better" in my screenshots library!

Iskariot I fully agree, planetary mining and better scanning for everything. :D

Cmdr Argent Steel: I thought that at first but as Lestat and Iskariot say it helps give a reason to the larger exploration ships with more module slots. To be honest I don't mind much either way thinking about it...

They certainly need variety in exploration outfitting. As it stands, if you want to explore, you need:

- Advanced Discovery Scanner
- Detailed Surface Scanner

in addition to the usual.. even the FSD doesn't need to be the best, you can explore quite close to the bubble and still make money. So every single exploration ship is outfitted the same (well, apart from new Cmdrs who can't afford them quite yet).

It'd be nice alright if we could have more options, so that you could optimise your ship for different specific tasks. A mineral scanner would be ideal for someone scanning for landables, but for non-landables it's just taking up a slot and adding weight and power drain; so you have to make a choice what you're going for. You could have a surface scanner that gets you better rewards for gas giants, but less for high metal content planets. etc. Or a scanner that scans faster, but with lower reward. Or gives you more money, but you need to get closer etc.
