[planetary missions] Scan the nav beacon or use the Discovery Scanner

Hi there!
I admit, I took a loooong break from Elite Dangerous and just found my way back due to the imminent arrival of Odyssey.
Things changed, since I left and my knowledge isn’t up to date any more.

When accepting planetary base scan missions, for example, the mission briefing advises me to scan the nav beacon or use my discovery scanner in order to locate the actual mission target.

However, when using the discover scanner (YES, I have one outfitted! ;) ), the scan impulse doesn’t reveal anything new on the planets. I scanned all new unknown signals, which all were in space and none of them on planets - with no success.

Falling back to the other option (scanning the nav beacon) the target body was immediately highlighted and the mission soon was completed.

So ... what did I wrong? How do I use the discovery scanner to locate a mission settlement on a planet without the need to drop into the nav beacon instance?

You're right, I think this might be a bug. Discovery scanner used to work, but recently I've found that I always have to scan the beacon.

Agreed, discovery scanner hasn't worked for a long time for these missions. I always use the nav beacon.

Though thinking about it, I've never actually bothered to go into the discovery scanner and see if I could resolve the PoI that way... Does that work? Or is that what you tried (in which case I'm glad I never bothered :D ).

Fss will create the unresolved uss in a peachy/orange circle rather than white. You still need to find it on the fss screen and then resolve it.
It is usually quicker to drop at the nav beacon...especially if it's on a planet...

Thank you, guys, for the answers!

I did already find out that the mission targets are displayed as orange circles. I couldn't see any of those on a planet, though. Hence no option to target and resolve it.
There wasn't any "energy signature" left, that would have indicated the presence of an unresolved signal either.

Anyway, apparently the faster option is to scan the nav beacon.
Thanks again for your help! 😘
