Horizons Planetary scan mission and SRV behavior

Planetary scan mission and SRV behavior, help please?

Hey. I landed on the indicated planet for a planetary scan mission. First time I've done this kind of mission. I thought I saw a dotted landing area near a city while flying in, which said search zone, so I tried to land there, sort of...
At some point a 'received data' message appeared In a mission update, with no further instruction or explanation (that really should happen, there's plenty of space, and it would be reasonable).
At some point rolling around in my srv, I noticed in the Navigation panel that "search zone outpost" had been added, along with that symbol for mission destinations (the orange globe). I set it to lock destination. However, the compass on the srv doesn't seem to work as it does on the ship?. Doesn't seem to work at all unless anyone can explain it to me...
the blue dot we try to line up in the center of the compass, to guide toward the selected destination, stays at the bottom or the back of the compass no matter how you turn.
so what if anything does selecting the "search zone outpost" destination accomplish?
What visual induction is there, and where is it, that guides us to our selection.

Also the <search zone outpost> in the nav panel always says 4.15Mm, no matter how far I drive it...

i hope I've explained this well enough. Any ideas?
thanks

UPDATE: still have no idea what's going on with this. Located a shipwreck using the scanner, but there was no "point of interest" and no "data panel" to "interface" with. Just eye candy? Why the strong scanner signal then...? Still have no idea how locking my destination is showing me anything anywhere to work from. I went back to the station, and of course the mission was not complete. But I do have a "search zone" place on the planet, which must be what the mission update meant (I guess).
Has anyone managed to complete one of these and can you please offer any explanation or help?

usually how these goes, is that you get a sort of "search area" target zone on the planet, when you head towards that area in your ship, it will move when you get close enough, it should do this about 5 times, and at the last location you will find a small settlement, where you land and take the SRV to scan the red beacon.

Yes, sounds like you landed to soon. 4 million meters is about 4,000 kilometers, hence why you don't seem to be getting closer... :)

When a HUD indicator is dotted as yours was, it means that the target is on the other side of the planet (i.e. not in clear view), so you needed to continue to fly (in orbital cruise, as 4,000 kilometers is still a long way even in your ship) until it turned solid and then get within about 15 kilometers of it, at which point, as Misty_Dark explains it will move around a few times before finally settling on the actual search zone or building or outpost. Once you can see that, then land and get in your SRV and complete the mission.

Could it be that the dotted circle you saw indicated that the search zone was on the far side of the planet (which is usually what dotted circles indicate). The would explain why you saw no movement in the SRV scanner or update on the distance...

Man I feel stupid....for some reason (middle of the night maybe?) I thought the dotted lines were just representing a different type of area, in this case. Completely missed the obvious, other side of the planet thing..

But also helpful to know the target moves around.

Thanks all, and I'll try again

Normally the "Search Area" moves around a bit as you target it from your ship and get closer and closer, until it resolves into the right spot. I do one on this video here, if you want to watch one being done. Skip to 43:28 or so.

Wow thanks for the link to your video. Great to watch you chase that target, I learned something about what the mean by "scanning the nav beacon" too. Helpful. Also I'm saving for a python (have enough but want to upgrade too), so I'll likely watch the earlier parts also.
You have a nice video style here, you don't yell, and you don't act like you've had way too much coffee either...
Thanks CMDR Artigan, and I'll look for your videos in the future!
