Planetary Scan to reveal "hot spots" / SRV mining drill

What I would like to see when you scan a planet, even one already with a detailed surface map, is that the detailed surface scanner being able to show "hot spots" where minerals or geysers can be located to survey. What would also be good to have is a drill module on the SRV to mine those locations like the automated drilling platforms you come across on some POI. Blasting rocks here or there is kind of wasteful using the SRV's cannons to collect fragments.

As yet another among those waiting patiently for surface mining, I support!

This sounds like it would very much go in tandem with an old idea I had for mining large, landable asteroids. It's all detailed in an old thread here, I may be posting a revised one soon but here it is for now. Figured it may inspire your own ideas or you'd just find it plain interesting lol: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ng-Bringing-the-team-dynamic-to-rock-breaking

In principle I do agree with this suggestion......but I don't want it to be *too* obvious. I still want at least some searching involved.....but at least within a proscribed area, and with a genuine idea of whether or not you're going to find something ;).

Yes, some mechanism that takes a bit of effort and skill and learning, the current completely random mechanics are a pain, but not something that's ridiculously easy but just takes a lot of time, like just sitting their for ten minutes while your scanner does a deep surface scan or something of the like. I would like a strip scan of maybe 50-100klms wide (depends on the size of the object, a small moon would require a smaller setting due to the closer horizon) to reveal surface features within a reasonably smallish area, that way you can choose to scan an entire planet which will take some time, effort and skill, you could just choose to scan likely looking areas and thus maybe miss some good stuff for the convenience of being done quickly or you could just do a completely random pattern and hope :D

But we do need something!
