Planetary Vehicle on an exploration vessel

Is it worth having one on an exploration ship other than the pure joy of driving round on a rock that no one else potential has before you?

Well, if you are planning on exploring areas with low density of stars where you might need jumponium and you need to collect the mats with SRV.

While you are totally correct in that being the developers plan, most explorers not suffering from cabin fever, will load up to the gunnals on Jumponium at all the know places in the bubble before setting out. If you need more than that, then you must be on your way to Andromeda :)

Jumponium? trying to look that up now lol..
Its a slang term for FSD boost mats :) J1 gives you a 25% range bonus for one jump, J2 gives 50% bonus, J3 gives 100%. Only needed if you're trying to reach distant star systems beyond the range of conventional FSD tech (or flying a low-ranged ship through diffuse regions of the outer arms).

Here's some info on it:

FSD Injection

Basic Boost (Jumponium 1 aka "J1")

  • Vanadium 2
  • Germanium 1

Standard Boost (Jumponium 2 aka "J2")

  • Vanadium 1
  • Germanium 1
  • Cadmium 2
  • Niobium 1

Premium Boost (Jumponium 3 aka "J3")

  • Arsenic 1
  • Niobium 3
  • Yttrium 1
  • Polonium 1

Required = no
Useful = yes

As above you can get materials to jump further, restock repair unit ammo. You can also get some pretty epic screenshots and as you say break up the exploration with some driving fun.

Worth it = up to you to decide

Caution, to land on planets shields are practically a requirement since you will take minor damage no matter how well you land.

Generally I'd say anything with more than 7 internal slots should take one (Asp, Anaconda, Clipper, Python, Orca etc). Small ships don't usually have the luxury of spare module slots.

I was taking a hangar and SRV with me at all times, mostly because my mind was struggling with a n "what if" feeling. Was if I find something extraordinary? What if I find a beautiful crater, canyon, etc? What if I want to chill at some planet?

What if I want to chill at some planet?

On the other hand, the hit on jump range was making me itch.

One of my previous expeditions led me to one of the real galaxy hypergiants, Mu Cephei. It sits between 2 arms, in an area with very few stars. Even on my light weight Asp, it was hard to get even close to it, only one particular path made it possible. And then when one last final jump remained, I had not enough jump range to do it. How I wish I could jettison the SRV and hangar at that moment. I ended up managing by trying a lot of sequences of jumps that let me just with enough fuel and light enough to make the jump.

That's when it hit me!.. I know what you're thinking, "the SRV would solve that problem by letting me search for material for extended jumps". But no... That's not it.

3 things hit me:

1. I would never have had this problem, and reaching Mu Cephei in the first place would have been easier, if I didn't take the SRV and Hangar.

2. Jumponion it not worth the hassle. Collecting materials is too uninteresting and time-consuming. There's no science in it, no strategy, no methodology to be perfected. Its not connnected to scanning, observations, inspection of geological features to pinpoint probable sources of materials. Its just driving randomly until the right rocks randomly pop up to get shot. Much like POIs and USS's. Thanks, but no thanks.

3. Why do I need the SRV in the first place? There's nothing wortwhile to pick up in the black. No areas that can only be accessed and explored by an SRV. The SRV adds nothing except necessity to collect stuff to maintain the SRV, and a shorter jump-range. I don't need it to explore planets in detail, to chill on planets. I can just land of fly close to ground, its actually much more exciting to fly skimping the ground, carving a canyon, circling a mountain, than to drive the SRV. I can visit every single place with my ship, without ever needing the SRV.

So now I just don't take hangars any more, and never looked back.

Maybe that changes with future content but for now I'd rather have those extra ly range.

If you like taking screenshots, it opens a whole lot of new vistas for you to explore.

With regard to 2. I bow to the rock rats for their superiour knowledge in that area, but the exploration live stream with Ed and Brooksie hinted that the materials are connected to geological features, star and planet types and that sort of thing.
