Planets in Elite are just a bunch of different coloured balls

Just found

so you practically live here and just now found this year old copycat article about a years old video about stellar forge that has been commented here several times ...

interesting indeed, but do you surely have something new to comment about this?

Come on, give the chap some slack! :D
Everything interesting on these forums get buried under trash really quick, no one can spot everything all the time. :)

I watched the discovery scanner episode, but I believe there is some additional detail / clarification in the article. I could remember wrong though...

I'm looking forward to an updated version for 2020 with the new shaders and surfaces.

Especially regarding the new Iceplanets we still didn't get.

It's true though that the universe looks brilliant in ED and I love planetary landings, especially since they cured the beige epidemic.
Planets look vibrant and very interesting now imho regardless of the fact that there's not an incredible amount of things to do.

Sometimes when I make a delivery at a planetary base I see this small canyon or great looking crater and I just have to take a look there.

Although I give FD punishment beatings over many areas of the game, I am impressed at the underlying technology that generates these worlds. I'm most looking forward to seeing how / if atmospheres are handled, as these will be a large part of the generators work.

I'd say one of the biggest challenges for atmospheric planets is realistic terrain. Since they already use tectonic plates and volcanism for the simulation they are already half way there. What's probably missing is simulation of corrosion, which isn't more complicated than the stuff they are already doing anyway.

I imagine its a bit like Civs way of doing things- younger worlds are more jagged and older worlds smoother in the presence of weather and liquids- as well as having extra erosion around rivers and tributaries.

Agreed.
While exploring, I do notice a whole lot of similar 'types' - the ice moon with the purple canyons, the rocky brown desert moon, etc. but variety is more than enough to make it really noticeable. On the surface or in low flight, there's frequently something to go look at - a neat crater, a cool mountain.

I just think it looks bloody hilarious sometimes - the planets look like they're made of Plasticine. :D

(Not a part of this thread, but if Fdevs would adjust things so that planets didn't orbit within touching distance, it wouldn't be so obvious. :) )
