Plannets marked as mapped and not mapped?

So im a little confused, if i look at a system map and click on a planet, the info box tag says "this planet was mapped by xyz" yest if i click on the text information box on the left side of the screen it says "this planet has not been mapped" ??

Secondly, i thought that to map a planet, you need to shoot it with probes, this then shows you the surface of the planet when you zoom in via the system map....however regardless of state, some planets shoe me there surface when zoomed in and others are just the outline with no surface shown??

Can someone a little learned please explain. Thanks

You need to scan the planets with the FSS yourself in order to see their surface, whether or not they've already been first discovered by someone else. If a planet has already been mapped by another Commander, you still have to fire probes and map it yourself in order to see any surface signals. The text in the information box on the left keeps track of whether YOU mapped the surface or not.

Ok thanks. except how does that explain why i can see 'some planets' surfaces via the system even when i have not scanned them?

I think that the FSS has a passive scanning range of a few tens of light-seconds, just like how the old discovery scanner (pre-3.3) had a passive scanning range. That means that once you're within a certain range of a planet, it'll automatically be scanned, which will let you see the surface of the planet. This is most commonly seen when exiting out of hyperspace into a new system. If there's a planet that orbits several light-seconds away from the main star, it'll automatically be discovered by the FSS.
