Planning a long range exploration trip...

I was able to time myself once and do 1 jump every 45 seconds when completely going at it with full attention.

Impressive. The best I've managed reliably so far is around a minute (FSD engineered 53ly Anaconda), though I have recently started spooling up the FSD before scooping has finished, so I can probably take a bit off this without risking heat damage. For me, the biggest single factor is how long I am in witchspace, and this varies quite a bit from jump to jump - it seems to depend more on the number of objects in the destination system than the actual distance. I also think the speed (or lack thereof) of my laptop and internet has an impact, but they are less easily quantified.

I just did the 5000 LY run for Palin, it was surprisingly easy and I vastly over-prepared for it. I ran it in my Asp-X, it took a few days at about an hour per day, basically in 1000 LY chunks. There was no destination, ED being a very process-oriented game I simply chose a direction (toward the core, probably the most common choice) and went "thataway" until I had gone about 6000 LY so I could be sure I was at least 5000 LY from my in-game point-of-origin. Didn't need the AFMU, never turned mine on and came back with 98% hull after colliding with a stellar boundary. Didn't need to strip the ship either, turns out 5000 LY isn't so far after all. Felt more like driving to a far off relative's home and back than an exploration. Picked up a few "You were the first to discover" messages.

I checked out the Coal Sack nebula, it was as expected, dark, then turned inward toward another nebula just to have a destination, did the same coming back, sort of like stopping off at tourist traps.

TBH, you probably won't need an AFMU for relatively short trips (a few thousand lys). In my experience, each neutron star boost knocks about 1% off your FSD health (I think this depends on how long you spend in the jet). For a longer journey (mine is currently about 50,000ly out of Colonia, with another 100,000 before I get to dock again), I would certain recommend having one as the wear and tear (particularly to the FSD) can accumulate. And (if you have a spare slot) they don't have any mass (for some reason).

I'm holding back on my next trip into the black until 2.3 lands... I'm hoping there's still a few tweaks in the bag for explorers! I've just got to get a bit of Arsenic for some G5 FSD upgrades for the AspX, and I'm all ready!

Well I took three passenger missions to Sag A* and back. 240 million plus the data, and finished off my exploration rank. My prep was 3 cabins on Annie with both scanners, upgraded fsd, enough power distributer to boost, 5a thrusters, max scoop, heatsinks, and filled the rest with AFMUs. Well I did throw in an extra class 5 fuel tank, which was completely unnecessary since I was going to the center. Then I just went out in the black.

Be careful if you run passengers to the center, the POI at Sag A* spawns pirates that will scan you....had 2 go to unhappy and 1 go to content.
