Plasma+rails: any good for PvE?

I want to build a cheap, lightweight trainer for PA+rails practice, and evasive maneuvering. Compromised nav beacons have plenty of small, hard to hit targets. For training purposes (not for quick kills and rank-chasing), are Plasma+rails viable for PvE?

Absolutely, but NPCs don't fly like CMDRs.
So if you are "training" with PVP in mind, NPCs won't be that valuable beyond basic timing of the reticles etc.

Yeah, I get that I won’t be a PvP-god after shooting some NPCs. I just wanna be able to hold my own against other PvPers. Just like shooting a moving piece of cardboard won’t make someone a fierce warrior on the battlefield. But it might help with timing and optimal firing distance.

Hmm. The question is interesting. It's not about how effective it is, but rather as training tools.

I personally would say: absolutely do that. Especially for rails, experience makes hell of a difference. Just having a feeling for how long you have to hold the fire button for it to discharge makes a huge difference. Having some experience with that allows you to pull into a target instead of having to stay on it all of the time.

Yep, just know the gulf is very wide.

It's useful for testing loadouts and new weapons for sure.
Watch some vids of people who are good with them.
PAs are most often used when you're crossing paths/closing distance, and rails when they apex at a distance, or are trying to flee.

Join a player group to have some friendly PVP training? Doesn't even need to be a "PVP" group. And if you catch a rebuy I'm sure they'll give you some free wing mission tickets to cover it. Besides joining a group makes the game much more interesting. [up]

PA/Rails are my PVE bread & butter. Slap some Plasma Slugs on and have fun, don't forget Long Range on your Rails. Rails become easy mode pretty quickly. PA can be trying when dealing with Vipers/Eagles/etc.

I'm no PvP God to be sure but I did find that early learning with rails and PAs vs. NPCs at a compr. NavBeacon did give me step one of training to at least time things and learn to reticle pull.
Its a lot more challenging to land shots against commanders but you have to start somewhere.

As other have said, good training, but if you want to step up from the normal run of the mill Haz res/CNB NPC's, then find a 'Pirate Activity' grade 6 first so you know what coming, then try a '7' for that extra bit of tuffness.

Quite a step up from normal wanted NPC's, the ships you will encounter will be still flown by AI, but the ships are engineered, so a better practice for you tactics and more of a run out for your ship attack and defence capabilities.

STILL not a Cmdr, but a much better work out before the real experience of a PvP encounters!

Good luck Cmdr.

PAs and railguns on all my ships (I do more PvP than PvE these days, but do not change my weapons for PvE), and I echo what the others have said. When I'm feeling rusty, I go to the comp nav and sharpen up on elite eagles and vipers (those vipers are bar-stewards). It's definitely not the most efficient loadout for small ships in a comp nav, but it is fun, and useful practice for your aim.

If I'm drilling on specific weapons I turn a whole bunch of junk off and then concentrate on it to exclusion.

My last session in game was module sniping with the two small rails in a V3.
It took me over an hour and about a dozen kills before I was happy with my timing.
Then I turned on the c2 fixed canons and spent half an hour integrating them on roll and break passes.
Then I went and found a hollow triangle.
I constantly drill all the necessary strategies and weapons to make sure my balance, heat, power etc work as intended.
Pas and rails are the most satisfying to get right so get the most practice.
