Platinum - only available via mining?

I've been hunting around for some Platinum but it seems very rare in my area of space. Has anyone come across it for sale (I don't need to know where; it's enough to know that it is around if you search long enough for it.)?


I was just wondering because someone mentioned that you can only get it via mining. Is that true?

I have never found any for sale and ive been around.

Im inclined to believe that it is indeed only available as a mined resource and not a purchasable commodity.

I have asked this too, it seems like its Mining Only.. maybe like SamVerner said some outposts sell them rarely, but you shouldnt search for it, i made 40 mill Trade credits so far, i have really never seen any station selling it during my Trade-Route explorations

Oh well. I suppose mining deserves some sort of exclusivity on something that makes money. It is either extremely rare or mining-only in which case I'll just do something else; thanks for the replies.

It is definitely available for sale. Use the trade routes tool in the map to find likely systems, then look at the system maps and check station descriptions to see if you can find one listed as exporting platinum.

I've tried the trade route planner (whilst moving 100ly in 8 directions from my centre point), it doesn't list anyone trading platinum anywhere. I've also tried numerous systems trading metals. The upside is that I've increased my explorer rank but the downside is no one seems to stock it.

Don't use the galaxy map to find routes ... even now it tells "X is exported from", whereas X doesn't even sell the stuff. For now, best advice is to just explore, poke your nose to places, and see the lists yourself. I was hunting for things for faction grade/status/whateveritis increase, and Galaxy Map sent me to places where the stuff was NOT found at - it flat lied. Found the stuff by accident, my friend landed on station en route to completely different place.

Hartsfield Plant in Potriti usually has 1 or 2 tons of Platinum for sale and I've seen it at a few other stations as well.

Finding Platinum for sale isn't terribly difficult, but finding it for sale at a decent price - that's tough!

Checking my notes for the area I'm working, I've found just one place that actually sells the stuff - but the profit margin is so narrow that I prefer to trade in Silver in that area.
