You can buy it in commodity markets

You can see where stations import a commodity from by highlighting the relevant commodity - platinum in your case - in the Commodities Market and looking to the info panel on the right of the screen. You'll see the systems that sell it in there.

I've never seen it sold anywhere

Neither has anyone else. A quick search using Slopey's tool shows no know stations selling it.

@ Danube You are wrong. Try looking in commodities market again and seeing where it is imported from, on platinum that is always blank. I am not aware of it being sold anywhere & if anyone knows a market that sells it they are keeping incredibly quiet about it.....as would I

Yeah I have followed the trail of crumbs that way looking at the "imported from" section but seem to end up at several systems that don't even have it on the commodity list and don't import it either so it would appear that I'm at the source yet cannot purchase it

Hmmm, it told me when I needed to buy 4 tons. I went straight there, bought it and came back for a 61k mission payout. I wish I could remember which one - I have done so many trade/mission runs I have a hard time remembering. If I do remember I'll put in in here.

EDIT: Doh, I think it was actually Palladium I had to get, sorry. My bad.

I'm of the same opinion as the OP. I've never seen it for sale anywhere yet and assumed it was only a mineable commodity.

What a haul that would be. Maybe I need to start looking into mining...

I think it's mineable only. I used to sell the stuff I mined for a pretty penny indeed.

I've done that, too. Went and got my mining hauler, jumped all the way to my favorite rock-fishing spot and mined away, then got to turn in the platinum and ... uh. oops.

The good news is: still had platinum!
