Hardware & Technical Play Seat suggestions (Not DIY)

I have been wanting a good playseat for a while and have found a few (not so)inexpensive options. I would like to know if anyone has any of these or knows of anyone who has them or has considered these or other options.

Things to consider.

Must have options for any flavor: Hotas (or dual joysticks), rudders, Flight Stick/Driving Wheel, keyboard tray, mouse tray, Triple Monitor support and be sturdy enough to support people bigger than me. I weigh in at around 280 and am 6'2". No it is not muscle, not even close.

I have found 4 viable choices at the moment.

Obutto R3Volution http://www.mainperformancepc.com/product/obutto-gaming-cockpits/obutto-r3volution-gaming-cockpit

Obutto Ozone http://www.mainperformancepc.com/categories/gaming-sim-cockpits/obutto-ozone-gaming-cockpit/

Volair Sim http://www.volairsim.com/Home.php (out of stock, supposed to ship early April) East coast delivery

Speedmaster Flight http://speedmaster2.de/index_en.html (Out of stock, "production issues") Germany delivery.

So far, I like the construction of the speedmaster, but I like the options of the Volair as an all in one. The R3Volution seems to have quite a few add-op's and both Obutto products become pricy when mirroring the options available to the Volair Sim.

I am looking for ideas and additional suggestions because I know I didn't list all the possible good ones.

I love the idea, but I simply don't have the room for any of those.

Unless they are actively articulated, I don't see any benefit over a comfy chair, a nice big desk and some decent cable management.

If they are actively articulated, well that's another story :)

Personally I see these prices as vile, taking advantage of a niche area of gaming.
All the products are made from Welded metal tubing*, with an added cheap* seat.
One could ask a local metal artist to make something similar, custom to your needs, hardest part is finding a seat you like from a breakers yard, for far less*.

*IMHO

<snip>

This.

The prices are daft. Decent desk + chair + triple head monitor mount = something much less in cost and not for one purpose.

Unless you are swimming in cash and have the space of course, then go for it and post pics that we can drool at :)

I look at it like this.

You can go purchase a bicycle for $89 at the local dept store, or you can go buy one at a good bike shop for $600. Both will get you to the same destination. Both get you there, but why get the more expensive one?

For some things in life, it is not the destination that is important, but the journey getting there.

If I could get a set of plans that incorporated all the good aspects of these units together, I would find someone locally and have it built for me.

I can't draft, I don't understand enough about engineering and I have never welded anything in my life.

But I have no issues putting something together. If someone wants to draw one up and provide me the drawings, I will get someone make the pieces and I will put it together.

Designed it to be made from metal, even square tubing and I will show off the finished product.

I have this, and am not ready to recommend it.

Good: sturdy,
good expansion capability (leg length - monitor height - table height.
Pre-holed for Saitek gear

Bad:
Seat made of synthetic material - very prone to develop static electricity.
Seat 'seat' bucket too narrow - base sides end up being uncomfortable.
No seat height adjustment.
side panels for HOTAS are too far on sides despite full adjustment.
right hand side panel conflict with keyboard table post.
center panel, while a decent solution does not really work well with wide based joystick (X52)
No adjustment for monitors viewing angle.
No cable routing

All in all, while a fair solution, I would not repeat this buy - especially for the price.

Is all.

No welding, but if you're happy to hack a bit of wood about (or get someone else to do it :D )...

'Driving' sim seat - easily adaptable to flight/E: D

RS1 DIY build.

There's loads of others too.

The advantage with wood is that it's cheap, easily adjustable/customisable for *you* and you can paint it any colour you like.

I bought the R3volution with Star Citizen/ED in mind.

Here are pictures of my setup if it helps you decide.

This is just the cockpit alone, without the center spine installed (you’ll see why later) or the acrylic tabletops (I bought them for later, I don’t need them right now). I did purchase the A-10 mounts for my Warthog, which are extra.

Pictured on the seat is my E.L.O.B.S.W (Extremely Lazy Organic Bengal Seat Warmer) which is not included with your Obutto R3volution either.

This is what it looks like in “sim mode” when I’m seated. Throttle, stick and pedals are in their ideal position, but you can adjust to whatever you want. Including center stick mount if you prefer.

There is a single monitor stand that is included with the cockpit which I didn’t need because I will still be using my desk, an IKEA Galant. Even though the R3volution could easily double as a workstation, it’s only viable if you don’t require much desk space OR if you remain stationary for the work you do. My office chair is a Steelcase Leap, which is very comfortable, but it’s not adapted for simming. However it’s practical to wheel around my office (I have three desks and I wheel from desk to desk all day long.) Since the Galant has height-adjustable legs, I was able to raise the desk high enough so that I can simply slide the cockpit under it.

This is my workstation during the day:

I simply bring my monitors close to the edge of the desk (which is also U shaped).

I took the next picture from the seat of the R3volution. My FOV is slightly wider than what you see in the picture, but it gives you a good idea on the immersive nature of a surround setup. That is the bridge of the Constellation from the captain’s seat.

Here is the cockpit in “FPS mode.” Unfortunately you can’t simply swivel the keyboard and mouse tray because the stick is in the way, so what I do is I completely remove the stick (you twist a and take out the post, it takes about 10 seconds) and leave it on the floor, which gives me ample room to swivel the tray in front of me and use the keyboard and mouse for FPS games or in SC, for boarding sessions.

Yes, those are my feet.

The seat is a real car seat and is on rails so you can adjust the distance relative to the pedals. It’s comfortable, but I’ll have to get used to the “tightness” I feel. I’m 6’1″ 220 lbs and shaped like a fridge with wide shoulders, the back of my Steelcase Leap is much wider so I’ll have to get used to it.

Functionally, it is simply amazing. I was really struggling in games with the Warthog when it was mounted on the desk. I just couldn’t be precise and after an hour my wrist would be hurting. With a properly mounted HOTAS and pedals now in the right position, it’s a new experience altogether.

Let me know if you have any questions.

HALADA Sir, I really like your setup will try to make one with obutto ozone similiars to yours.
One question since I never saw a rig of obutto in person. Does the Keyboard tray elevates? I am looking at your 1st pic where the keyboard tray is pushed aside, and on the fifth pic the keyboard is in front of you, just wondering if it is possible without taking the joystick off. Also, is it confortable for long periods to use keyboard and mouse?

Thank you in advance, and Gratz for the setup!

Regards,
Infected!

Playseats

I've had a Playseat RS for a while now due to a Gran Tourismo fetish. Seems it wouldn't take much to convert it into a Playseat flight-simulator-chair

Have the X55 inbound for next week. Lovely.

I would love to have one of these Play Seats but they are sooooo expensive :( Maybe when I hit the lottery?

How expensive is it to make a 3 monitor setup? and do you need 3 video cards? Cause if it didn't cost too much I would like to do that.

@GMac, it does look a bit of a Beastie doesn't it! I just need those two sticky out bits as bolt-ons, but the flight specific chair would be the way to go if you don't already have one. Flight jacket and leather comms cap optional, but available.

@JamesJB, I run 3x Dell 24" off 2xGeForce 750Ti's. Monitors are as little as a pound on Fleabay. The cards I've seen go for £75 each, usually a oner. Dooooit, doooo it, dooooo it!

Sorry about ressurecting an old thread but....

I think what you may be looking for is something along these lines, No metal frame here it looks like a solid construction.
