Play the warp game

Hello Everyone

To the Moderators and Beta Management dealing with this Super Warp stuff is just draining me and making me very angry. I just want to play a space game not qualify for the NASA Launch Team.

Please I hope there will be a change with the way we warp around space. I know the game is not supposed to be easy but this is just to much. I spend so much time rewarping back to planets or stations that I flew by because I did not slow down at the right millisecond. It's just a bad way to start a game.

But that's part of Elite. It's a big galaxy and it does take time to get around. If you're not used to the game from playing previous versions, then it will seem strange to you. But trust me, you do "attune" yourself to it and you'll start to wonder why other games go for the "instant gratification" method.

keep the throttle just below the middle of the blue zone to avoid the overshoot until you get a better feel for it.

there are visual and audio clues for when you need to slow down and they give you plenty of warning, like your POV moving forward a little - its hard to explain exactly as i joined the game at the release of standard beta so by now i don't even need to think about it, its automatic.

That part of the Game ..... It was for me in the beginning the same, but if I learn and understand, that you diddn´t must use allways FULL POWER, then it will be easy stop in the right moment. Fill Speed in the beginning and then slow down more and more .... later you will figured out when the best Time to slow down to the minimum needed speed (Its depend how far, and where the Station is...) Some times you must adapt that there is a Planet in the way (which really slow you down...), but the learn about that is part of the game....

I found the most optimal is just slightly above middle. And you don't need to adjust velocity, the game will do it for you. You pretty much just have to align your cockpit with the destination and let the game cruise you in.

If the destination is far enough, I'll often look at my consoles or browse the sector map to pass the time. I don't mind it to much though. The thought of pulling out of hyperspace and seeing a giant star always gives me a warm feeling (no pun intended :). I imagine in time FD will add more ambience to the universe to make it more aesthetically pleasing. I think by far though, they need to dim down the orbital lines. It really kills the mood when you see them all over the place.

I sometimes think that new players don't yet understand the idea of gravity wells around planets and stars and that they affect the FSD drive. If you leave your throttle at 50% and just for experimentation fly towards and away from various celestial bodies you can see the effect as you accelerate or slow down without changing any settings.
I hope this is explained in the official guide eventually.
Judging the throttle setting is no different to driving towards a road junction. It takes a bit of experience to "know" the cars weight and braking characteristics but generally most people dont overcook it when they first get in because of a fear for their personal safety! :) Elite is a game though so the self protection instincts are not there.

o wow. now SC is to difficult.....The next thing would be: "the station menu's are to difficult you need a Dr's degree to understand them.... "

there is a sweet spot around the middle where you can leave the throttle alone and not have a problem, but its hard to hit it just right - hence the advice of just below the blue zone as one click too many and your throttle goes up and up and up.

An easy fool-proof way to navigate SC; between 12-9ls from your destination drop to 75% speed ship depending. Bind a key or something. There you go.

You can manually push more speed out ofc but that's the easy way. If there are many grav wells OR your destination is the opposite, a weak well (example: a station in wide orbit) you may over shoot even at 75%, a quick spiral out maybe drop to 50% for a sec and you're golden. There are numerous audio and visual cues to give you a feel for the grav effects.

Keep your approaches at a perpendicular entry. This minimizes the time spent slowed by the gravity exerted by bodies.

Good luck, have fun.

don't sweat it Commander this time next week you will be helping someone else get it too and you will be acing it like a boss :D
hang in ther Rookie it gets better and you will be glad you did.

James Bond FTW: full speed until the time to destination hits 0:07, then immediately slow down to about 75% throttle and keep it there. In almost all destinations this will get you there without overshooting as long as you don't let the time fall below 0:06. (You can then later learn how to make it go a bit faster, e.g., navigating around gravity wells and speeding up in the end.)

Actually, overshooting is a valuable tactic now to avoid interdiction. I sometimes overshoot 2 or 3 times to throw off suspicious looking ships in SC.

I just keep blasting past my destination at different angles, until I end up a few seconds from safe disengage distance/speed.

It usually works really well.

You just need to practice, they already told you how to do.
Bind e KEY to 75% THROTTLE
Bind a KEY to 100% THROTTLE

1)Once you reach the STAR, turn to destination and press 100%.
2)Once you are at 0:10sec to destination press 75%.
3)Once you see the Blue indication on the Radar(<1000km), disengage SC.
-IF it goes more that >10sec, because of Planet gravity,THEN press 100% and GO TO point 2.
-You just need to keep hands near the controls in case of interdiction.

Have a Safe Flight, Overshooting will be punishable by DEATH!!:D:D

I can relate to the OP on this - it's very easy to overshoot if you're not paying attention.

However with a little patience it's easy to get the hang of.

As others mentioned - keep your throttle in the 50% blue area and you will be fine. Once you gain more experience with how SC works then you can experiment with going faster as you will know when to throttle back.

there is a sort of auto pilot for speed that means you just have to steer.

1. lock the destination using your nav panel,
2. put the throttle in the middle of the blue indicator,
the ship will then control its own speed to target, including slowing down at the end,
3. if you are near a planet/star steer away from it to leave its gravity influence,
4. When you get near the space station try to approach it from inside its orbit generally that leaves you pointing at the entrance.

Me too, jumping in and out of the gravity well, you pull a U-ee and you're on point...

Well things are better now. Bringing the speed down right after warp out to the middle of the blue indicators is helping me. Now I can throttle the speed up and down and get the ok to stop the cruise and be close to the station almost every time now.
Thanks for the help :)

I found a good way of approaching planets to save time. Aim slightly "off" from the planet so you don't add another crater to the surface, keep at full throttle until you get the "slow down" warning, chop your throttle to halfway in the blue and pull a vertical loop. When you reach the top of the loop your speed drops to what you set it at, finish the loop and you are at the correct speed and simply adjust your heading. You do lose a little distance as you pull away from your target in the first part of the loop but on long (>1000ls) flights you gain more from the extra speed.
