play to win or play for fun?

I'm currently spending more time getting involved with PvP as PvE battles are starting to become drastically boring and ever-so-predictable. Admittedly, i'm young in the PvP world and possibly physical age is a factor. I'm 37 now. I'm at that stage in life when i don't feel the need to win anymore and just "taking part" is now fun for me (Which is strangely odd as it frustrates the hell out of me when my 10 year old daughter get's a trophy or a badge from school for "taking part", the same trophy/badge is given to everyone, regardless of whether or not they won, which they also don't know as they don't... keep... SCORES, which really, really anno... i'll stop digressing right there).

Anyway, i'm noticing a trend when it comes to PvPing, it seems most of the encounters I've had either start out badly-sided or end up that way. Out of the last 20ish battles I've had, probably 12-14 have been Wings simply out to destroy me. Little to no contact, just interdiction, little skirmish i know i'll never win but you gotta have a go right? Mostly I've managed to jump out the system but have had my ship destroyed more than couple of times, I've no issue with that, this post really, really isn't about that. I fly in a massively over-engineered Corvette so accept i'll be targeted to a certain degree.

The one's that have mildly annoyed me are the ones where I'm battling against another Cmdr and it's going well for both of us, both getting some good hits and dodging blah, blah. than his mates show up and (for me anyway) spoil all the fun. I've had this happen when I've been far worse off than the other guy and it seems to me their behaviour is "this is taking to long, we kill you now". My immediate thought is my original foe has simply been holding me whilst he waits for his buddies to turn up even when he was doing far better, which if true, seems... well i don't know is the truth. what i do know however, it just takes all the fun out of it for me. In this example I'd have rather been destroyed by the original foe in a 1v1, at least i'd feel like i lost to a better Cmdr and would look at where i went wrong, what mistakes did i make, etc. when his mates join in, it seems the only mistake taken was getting in the fight in the first place.

So, what i am curious about is how other Cmdr's view their play-style, more-so concerning whether it's play-to-win or play-for-fun, and what your thoughts are on the difference, if any?
I'd also like to find out if other Cmdr's are seeing the same things i am with PvP or even better, i'd like to hear about the good encounters you've had which you thought were going south but turned up roses for whatever reason

My own personal play-style is clearly play-for-fun, i wouldn't want to destroy another Cmdr in a 1v1, heck, i'd offer to escort them to the nearest station as it seems the right thing to do. I believe we needs folk to be more "Gentlemanly" or "Sporting" i guess which in the big scheme of things, seems a long shot.

Gummy-bears & liver pâté for your thoughts

For Fun. Totally different game play to you however.
I'm Solo PvE Ironman, reseting save on Ship/SRV destruction. Each reset is a new Commander, with different personalities and characters. The fun for me is how their story unfolds, and if they become memorable. It also means that I have very different play styles from commander to commander.

For fun.
I am not into PvP at all.
That was fun 20 years ago, but even then I wasn't really into it.
It is also why I never cared about sports either.
I just can't bring myself to care one bit about who jumps higher, runs faster, scores more goals, best can evade doping controls etc. etc.

Started play to win, moved to play for fun and am fairly entrenched into the latter now.

Spent hours/days/weeks of time with groups like the Fuel Rats etc.

Most recent venture: Trying to break the record time from sol-sag A*. In doing so I've spent maybe 3 weeks and 40mil credits on preparation and made 2 trips to Sag A* and 1 trip to Beagle point just to get a route plotted that will be fast enough...

Yeah... Still kinda playing to win with breaking the records etc but having immense fun in the doing not just fun getting the reward which I think is what counts. :)

Interesting Started PvP but got Hounded like you so now only Play PvE. Like the idea of helping other Cmdr's in fix's like out of fuel or just being jumped on by Prirates. But every time I try PvP people just want to turn agressive.

Maybe I am looking to much into it...

Well, i'd like to quote myself on this one:
'Whoever had the most fun, wins the game'.

Seriously, its a game... the only reason I play it is for entertainment

I just don't know what "winning" would look like in this game!

I've done just about everything, dabbled in PvP (badly) thrashed the pants off Sothis & Robigo, Bounty Farmed, mined (a bit) did the CG's running interference and stuff like that. Now I'm into deep space exploration.

For me at the moment, every day is a win!

I'd recommend flying small ships, it's a lot of fun. My iCourier can outrun 99% of other PvP ships, and those i can't outrun i can put up a decent fight against. It is moderately PvP rigged, but can still carry 8 tons of cargo across the bubble, or i can fit SRV and go cause mischief on planets. And if you get blown up, with rebuy well under 500 kCr, it's no big deal. So i just run around as a messenger boy going wherever adventure takes me. True to the Courier spirit. :D

The only way to "win" is to have fun, and I'm having the most fun of all, so everyone else has lost.

Fly Safe, Fly Smart, and remember - at some point in their life everyone will gamble on a fart and lose.

I can't imagine playing a computer game for any reason other than for fun. I do realize that not everyone's idea of fun is the same. Me, I like bulk commodity hauling (space trucker).

At the point it isn't fun, play another game for a while.

How do you 'win' this game?

I would play PVP if it was more of a fair fight. As it is, the one with the best engineer rolls wins (and I can't be bothered with that kind of utter insanity). Or the one with most friends to help gank a poor sod...
I Play For Fun, and as of now, that is only PVE for my sake
