Playable Ships and Variants

Hi Cmdrs

One thing that I’d really like to see developed over time is the number of ships in the ED universe. I don’t know how this is handled in the canon but surely if space travel has been around for hundreds of years, and there are 1,000’s of populated systems each with millions of people supporting economies on a planetary scale, then you’d expect there to be hundreds of ship types. Old & new, obsolete & cutting edge, good and bad, custom made and military models etc etc. I think this would help to add considerable depth to the universe and contribute to making it a more believable and immersive game world.

Obviously the big limiting factor for FD is the resource to create these ships – and in an ideal world I’m sure they’d also want as many ships in game as possible.

So I suppose two points.

One, do you think FD will continue to develop more ships past the stated goal of 30 (I think its 30)? Perhaps this is linked to how well ED does and how long the player base continues to support the game.

Two, in lieu of lots of new ships, how would Cmdrs feel about “variants” of existing ships. I thought this might be a quick and easy way to add a bit of variety and depth to the existing ship roster. I guess my thinking here is maybe a Light / normal / heavy version of each ship. So the light and heavy will look suitably and subtly different, have slightly amended performance stats (i.e heavy = less manoeuvrable but better armour) and also a very slight difference to internal layouts. Price would obviously need to be adjusted for each.

It’s a very high level idea I admit but if light and heavy variants were introduced then immediately the number of ships goes from 30 to 90. I’m likely hugely underestimating the amount of work required to achieve this and if its basically the same as creating a brand new ship then its probably a non-starter.

I’m just really keen to see the variety of ships increase considerably in the future so would be interested to hear any ideas others may have.

I think you answered your own question.

Variants are fine. The Diamond back explorer is a variant of the scout. Can't see why we wouldn't have more variants in future.

There were three(?) different variants of the Eagle in previous games although they were rubbish.

As for new ships, it's easy to forget that they are massive and Frontier have to allow for the interior expansion in future so expect it to be at least as demanding as adding a new map to a FPS game.

I agree it would be nice to have ship variants. We currently have a tiny taste with the diamondbacks, but it would be nice for more.

You're probably right-there's no easy way getting around the fact that it's loads of work to add a ship, even if it's a subtle variation of something in game already.

I may do a bit of research into how this is treated in the books. Maybe only certain companies have licence to produce ships?? No idea.

Fingers crossed ED becomes as successful as possible and more ships are added to the game in future.

I think that FD have shown adequately with the Diamondback that you can have two similar ships with different purposes. There was monster variety in Frontier/FFE, but back then you didn't really have cockpits, and the exterior was just a shape, so they could probably model a ship in a couple of hours. Now it's a proper art job, especially if the want to skin it too. But if they follow the Diamondback model, they could easily have the Boa as an Anaconda variant, the Constrictor as a combateer style Adder (again bigger), without overthinking it too much. What we really need is a few extra roles, e.g. passenger ships, and perhaps multi-ton freighters with cargo bays that take 5T containers, rather than the "everything weighs a metric ton". The old way of doing some commodities in kg was more flexible, and logical, and even if they had 100kg cargo bays that you could fill with 100 x 1kg of rare objects it would expand things somewhat. Starboats and Bulk Carriers are part of our heritage.

While I do agree with what you have said. Some craft are established multi-role ships, such as the Anaconda, which its main combat class is a Frigate. However this doesn't leave out the Python which is a small Patrol Cruiser. So I wonder how much farther they could take ships of equal classing and sizes, and make them role specific or multi-role craft, it's definitely do-able, and for the 30 ship limit, I don't think that will be the limit, certainly Frontier will change their mind as they look longer down the road and we keep supporting their product.

Yeah, this. There are a few people who still think the Diamondback got split into the DBS and DBE during the Beta, instead of them being two separately-modeled rides the whole time. I WISH they could work that fast! If FD could do that in under a week just to appease a bunch of grousing we'd already have a hundred ships in the game.

That's what sort of planted the idea. I wonder what the development history of those ships was. Did FD always intend on releasing 2 versions or were various trial Diamondback ships developed and then when it came to it, 2 versions from the drawing board were released?

Very true! Perhaps it was always planned to release 2 DB ships. Sometimes communication on these things could be clearer.

It'd just be quite cool to visit some backwater system working an economy on its @rse and see some God awful obsolete craft flying around. I wouldn't necessarily be fussed about these things being pilotable. I just think it would add nice depth and context.
