Player Bounty Hunting? Viable? Even Possible?

I got my HOTAS, voice attack, and the RIFT is on the way. So far, I'm having a blast with the training missions (combat training only, preorder bonus). Its like I'm the commander of an actual ship -- it's awesome. Well Anyways....

I'm reading more and more on the forums between my sessions and it sounds like running into other players is going to be uncommon.... you could say even mighty rare.

Are my hopes of being a PLAYER bounty hunter unrealistic? I played SWG purely as a bounty hunter because the thrill of the hunt is unlike anything i've experienced in a game... I wish to do the same here.

Hate to think that I got all this gear (HOTAS, RIFT, VOICE ATTACK, $45 amy voice, etc.), only to find out I can't actually hunt down other players.... just shoot down random NPCS. Still cool.... but not as fulfilling.

Thanks, and yes this is my first post.

If you don't mind spending a bit of time running them down, sure ...

Also there are concentrations of players in certain areas, in the latest beta most players stayed near eranin area even though there was a very large amount of space they could have spread out to and I got some pretty nice player bounties from there ...

I've done a combination of pirating and bounty hunting.

My main system has been a very active one close to the starting system Aiabiko, and I frequently see up to 10 players at same time in that system. One day I figured I would start scanning players using the Kill-Warrant Scanner.

So I started interdicting random players, regardless of their initial Clean/Wanted status and scanned them after dropping out of supercruise.
I also camped near the only station in the system, scanning players as they were landing or departing.

I must have scanned dozens, if not hundreds of players in that area (and obviously some have been scanned two or three times due to their re-visiting the area).

I have not found a single player, anywhere, that carries an active bounty... in fact, the only player that was flying around with a 6-9k bounty... was MYSELF >.<

My conclusion is that players who do any activity that adds a bounty on their head are playing in solo mode, e.g. PvE pirating.

So your interest in being a bounty hunter that goes after players is going to be a long-winded and frustrating experience. And if you even find one with a bounty he will most likely just /logoff when you try to interdict him or get the jump on him.

Bottom line, at least in my experience, bounty hunting is exclusively a PvE activity. You are much better off trying to pirate players if you want that player-vs-player interaction.

Optionally, go to Nav Beacon, find a player who is bounty hunting, wait for him to shoot at a target then fly in front of his guns so he hits you instead, thus incurring a bounty for attacking you (as long as your status is Clean). Then you turn guns on him and collect 200-400 bounty. GG~

Well, it's definitely possible. Here's what I saw in Sol yesterday:

I did not look into it further, but I guess bounty hunting in it's current for means tracking these guys down, scanning them with a kill warrant scanner, and showing them who's boss. Good luck ;)

Edit: Yeah, I didn't think of the solo mode possibility. That might be a bummer...

I occasionally see some player characters around flying witg FSD with bounties on their head. Don't bother to hunte them down though.

If you head towards the main systems such as Sol. You will find a plethora of players there. So it's very much possible to bounty hunt, especially in those systems.

Aside from Rex Fox's post, I'm feeling quite good about the prospect of bounty hunting. Thank you all very much!

I am not trying to deter you from trying bounty hunting. Just want you to have a realistic feedback on how I have experienced it thus far in areas that are fairly heavily populated as they are starter systems.

If someone is flying around in Open Play with a bounty then most likely they have an all A-rated Cobra or Viper with high-end equipment and enough hours behind a HOTAS to not shy from a fight.

Shame really, cause it would be inspiring to see people in Eagles, Sidewinders and so on actually have a go at eachother... that's the ideal Elite world as we want to see it, where pirates and bounty hunters clash together, where you are searching for those high bounty players and traders are avoiding certain systems due to the infamous pirate clan there.

The reality however is that most are flying 'undercover' in Solo mode trying to get a fully upgraded ship thinking they will dominate the galaxy. Sad fact is, if you spent 100 hours flying from A to B in a hauler and type6 in Solo mode to buy and fully upgrade a Cobra then you have 0 hours dogfighting and just as many hours fighting actually players, and nomatter how good your hardware is you will end up stardust.

Most don't realize that though so they avoid fights while in their Sidewinder and keep grinding in Solo mode.
