Welcome pilot, to the LANDFALL program.
Due in part to the explosion of space exploration by independent pilots at the turn of the century in 3300 a tripartite commission was formed among the superpowers to reduce injuries and casualties and increase survivability of pilots and crew who venture to new untamed worlds in the frontiers of space.
In the six years the commission examined ways to combat casualties among pilots and colonists one was increasing education. To this end we at the EPSG decided to create the EPSG's Survival School and introduce the LANDFALL training program. Not only do we at the EPSG want to increase the odds of survival of our prospective students we want to instill in them an appreciation and love of the wild, natural worlds they will encounter and a desire to conserve the delicate environments they seek to explore.
"It has always been the mission of the EPSG to study and catalog the native lifeforms of each unique world discovered by humanity. We feel that people will find these places eventually and that hoping for the best in terms of reducing exploitation of these pristine worlds is not a solution. It is better for these places and the commanders exploring them if everyone is equally capable and equipped to handle the stresses of colonial life, survival in grim circumstances, and the challenges in gaining scientific understanding in the field. Dangers are ever-present on untamed worlds as I myself can attest. Having discovered numerous earth-like planets for the EPSG the scars of those dangerous encounters can be read on my face."
"Not only will the flora and fauna of these strange yet familiar places be hostile to you but the very air and water can potentially kill. The landfall program is designed to take all of human triumph into account. Life lessons from the very origins of survival on Earth to the taming of other celestial bodies when mankind departed Sol. Every time-honored technique from hand making rope to electrically cauterizing wounds with modern tools will be applied to empower our students' survival instincts. The EPSG stresses the non partisan aspect of this training and welcomes soldiers and civilians of every background and nationality. Each inductee enrolled will be granted automatic membership to the EPSG upon completion of the LANDFALL program's final exam."
"I hope that graduates of the intensive two week long survival test on local frontier worlds carry forward with them the spirit of humanity's regard for the natural elements. That they carry forward the feelings of never giving up or giving in and that they recognize humanity's inextricable connection to the natural world, all of which the exam is designed to induce."
