Player Faction or Twitch Streamer Ship Skins

Something that would be a great way to combine roleplay and money would be allowing players to design and submit their own personalized ship skins.

For example, a powerplay faction, or twitch player, could make their own ship skin, and all their players could display their allegiance by buying and using that skin. Part of the money earned would go to the maker of the skin, and part of the money would go to Fdev. Submitting a skin would have a nominal submission fee to prevent spam.

Many players like to support their favorite twitch streamer by buying a sub or donating, and half that money goes to Twitch. Seems reasonable that players who want to support their favorite twitch streamer would be willing to do the same and buy one or more of their ship skins, supporting both the player and fdev!

I suggest you visit EDAstro, open the interactive galaxy map and have a look-see round what players "draw" on the galaxy map with their flight paths. And I'm guessing the one about sending pictures of undressed persons is probably harmless compared to what we'd get it if players could willy nilly design their own ship skins.

theres only one insignia worthy of display

jokes aside
you are talking about tennogen*. which is absolutely amazing concept working imo very well. one could only wish something like that for ed (or other fdev games as a matter of a fact)...

*player created paid cosmetics being (after approval) implemented into game with 30% from each sale going to the creator.

Like I said, they would need to be approved, and each submission would have a fee(in real money), so if players want to waste their money submitting phallic imagery, more power to'em.

Heck, I encourage it! Support Fdev!

A discord server I was in had someone with their profile picture set to their character flashing a v-for-victory sign in front of the flash and circle and since most of the server was american gamers and not particularly european history buffs none of them recognised it.

It wasn't even someone that anyone found particularly surprising would do something like that, they were a massive edgelord capital-G Gamer, but suffice to say that drawings of penises, while the obvious go-to for bored teenagers, are not the worst thing someone could create with a freeform logo.

Right and the flora are already trolling us enough from that angle

Sure, but there's a pretty easy answer for that. A disclaimer that says that any and all skins may be revoked at any time if they're found to violate the community policy. Poof, problem solved!

The objective here should be to support the community AND the game, and at the same time, allow players to earn stuff ingame without needing to spend currency. This seems to me like the perfect solution, plus it's roleplay that can actually matter!

It's a thing that I'd probably feel better about if fdev weren't so tight-lipped about reports actually doing anything. Other games give notifications if your reports have action taken upon them, even if they don't say which report it was that they acted upon, just to let players know they're not screaming into a useless void.

To this day I still don't know if that guy I saw who showed up with his cmdr name set to "[racial slur for a particular ethnic group] hunter" got made to change his name.

Oh please. I reported an NPC name which was a racist reference to a plane crash. I got the "Oh we care about stuff like this kthxby" email from support. Some time after, guess which NPC name I see again.

See, I honestly don't know if I'd catch whatever reference that is if I saw it, which is the unfortunate nature of those kinds of things. People love sneaking stuff in under the radar when it comes to web forms.

The difference would be, in this case they'll be paid for it. There's little incentive for them to bother fixing a random NPC name; here, the act of judging earns income.

There was a time when FDEV did a player-submitted ship decals - for the Rise to Power event. That was really cool, I still sport our Border Coalition decal sometimes.

There was also a competition once for ship paint jobs (IIRC that's how the Medusa Cobra got in the game for example). The winners got their winning skins for free and now they are in the store available to buy for ARX.

When asked if this will ever happen again (and the question was asked multiple times over the years), FDEV always said no, but didn't really provided an explanation. So I wouldn't count on it.
