Thats right. Like many people, i had an idea.
Personally, i love the game, with both its flaws and its perfections. However, like many players i have come across, one thing really takes me away from the immersion i so desire. THE GRIND...
Money is the driving force that makes any life, real or virtual, possible. and the only way to make your life easy, is to be loaded
Elite Dangerous is no exception. and thus, i present my idea. Player owned planetary operations.
I am aware of the magnitude of effort involved in making planetary landings possible in a game with such a vast world (or galaxy). So i am not suggesting that. all i propose is an additional interface in the ship console that allows a player to run, upgrade and control industrial and corporate ventures on a planet or several planets of their choice.
The interface would be used to monitor production and export, upgrade components of the facility e.g. better drills for a mining facility or bigger green houses for an agricultural approach, and purchase and upgrade transport ships and fighter escorts. Even set the parameters for a transports behavior. e.g. when hull is below 50% Surrender Cargo. (that one is just a spitball).
More "corporate shark" type mechanics could also be implemented such as dealing with another players business on the same planet by either force or negotiation with the player to buy or sell your business on the planet they wish to control, maybe to get a bonus for total control of that planet. Or by costing them so much in fighter escorts to protect their ships, that they just give up and sell. Even full corporate mechanics like shares and hostile takeovers. (thats a bit of a long shot and they're the only "corporate" words i know
)
With this, i think it would also make piracy a lot more fun in that it gives a player more of a sense of influence on another players game. You could even personally post a bounty on a troublesome players head to be paid out of your own pocket.
I am suggesting that these transport and escort ships exist in the multiplayer world and would thus probably have to be low frequency, but i would think it is possible. The cost involved with running these corporations such as outlay for new transport ships and escorts, insurance for "lost" ships and interrupted output could balance out the massive income and give the player another choice of what kind of player they want to be.
Also, it could be used to influence powerplay in a new way. A corporate powerhouse player could use his massive wealth and influence on the galaxy to help further his own power or use trade embargo's to undermine another.
Its all down to the devs to decide how they would go about it, if they decide to at all, but i think its a really good way to give the game a little more depth and personalization.
So let me know what you think, suggestions are welcomed and desired, and if you like the idea, let it be known so frontier might take notice.
Cheers,
