An actual player owned fleet.
Important to note :: These would all be part of the Fleet instance and NOT individual ships. The only exception is when a Destroyer or Cruiser is actively in combat away from the fleet.
- Destroyer
- This could be customized with loadout kits similar to how the shipyard/outfitting works.
- This craft would act as an entity that someone could call into a fight via their comms menu to come in and rain down armaments on any hostiles in the area for a window of time and jump out returning to the Fleet.
- Any damage this vessel takes would simply cost money (and/or resources like titanium, gold, copper, cobalt, etc.) to repair and refit after each engagement it takes part in.
- For obvious reasons
- Only one of these could exist in any 1 instance at a time.
- It must be in the same system you are in to be called.
- There would be a short delay from calling to arrival with warnings and notifications to keep friendlies informed.
- Cruiser (depending on how Odyssey plays out this vessel could be left out or not)
- This vessel is strictly for planetary bombardment.
- Would have small, very short range weapons for self protection but a few very large, very strong, very long range weapons for maximum hitting power from extreme long range.
- Player would have to be within the exclusion zone of a planet to call this vessel.
- Target designation could work in possibly 2 different ways.
- Coordinate entry
- Laser designation via special utility mount
- Supply Ship
- A smaller vessel that acts as significant extra storage for the Fleet.
- This storage would be accessible from the carrier for ease of use.
- This could even do small amounts of mining for the fleet if parked very close to a ring or asteroid belt.
- Very, VERY SMALL amounts.
- This is not really needed, this was just a last second idea I had before I posted this.
- Designated Security Vessel (DSV)
- This vessels role is to protect the fleet.
- It's armaments consists of...
- Short range weapons to protect itself.
- Pre-set kits with ship groups purchased by the player as kits like the shipyard and outfitting utilize to protect the rest of the fleet.
Again, these would all be part of the Fleet instance and NOT individual ships (space is crowded enough as is). The only exception could be when a Destroyer or Cruiser is actively engaged in a separate instance but even then it is only for a couple of minutes at most before it returns to the fleet.
As for hyperspace jumps, all ships jump together. This would require more Tritium, hence the utility for the Supply Ship as people don't generally put extra fuel tanks on their combat ships (some even downsize theirs to begin with). Is the supply ship required? No, but it can and will make longer trips easier even if it was the only other vessel in the group.
The main purpose for this is to give the community an entertaining and modular money sink as well as opening up avenues for you guys to add larger and more serious threats and ways to deal with them.
Take how cool it is to drop into normal space and see your carrier; now add an entire fleet of baddassery and big teeth to that image. That, IMO, would never get old. Especially if there were AI pirates zooming around getting gunned down by the DSV and it's strike force.
