Player Settlements coming to the game??

As many of you will know from the livestream the devs have said there is a "Major Feature Update" coming soon but won't say what it is. For a while now people have been stockpiling Building Schematics on fleet carriers and i've been thinking that the only two other schematics in the game are weapon and suit which are both used for engineering. I am wondering (unsure if copium yet or not) that they have seen how Bethesda tackled outpost building in Starfield and are going to introduce player settlements into the game with these schematics.

They might be instanced, they might just be a solo thing for your CMDR to use, or they could be like Fleet Carriers where people can visit you and trade commodities. It could also be for minor factions or large squadrons in the game to have an actual "base" for lore/RP reasons instead of just saying they're based at X station.

Again, could be copium but I think it could be pretty cool. Even if the planetary generation is boring and we'd all live on dusty rock moons.

Two separate things here - there's the "key feature overhaul"/"feature update" from the 2022 roadmap, which seems to be the Powerplay rewrite (I'm not sure Frontier are as worshipful of wording as the forum is, so they haven't technically confirmed that the Powerplay rewrite is it - it just fits their earlier descriptions well)

There's also the "new feature" coming after that - which is not described as "major", just "exciting" and "brand-new".

The new feature may or may not be connected to the new ships (it depends how much you want to read into "new capabilities" for the new ships) which may or may not affect your guess at what the feature is.

We are only in Feb, soon we will be swamped with base building threads with folks still unable to comprehend how this can work in a multi player game.
Already making a bingo card for the end of the year,

No1 "They promised base building and haven't delivered"
No2 "It was datamined - they promised!"

I don't see how the game being multi-player is a problem for at least most of the player suggestions/hopes for what base-building might do or how it might work. There are plenty of multiplayer games which feature base building, some of them are even set in space, and all of the obvious process steps are things Elite Dangerous already does in other contexts, unless I'm missing one somewhere.

Hopefully no.

To my mind exciting rules out being in charge of a base/settlement/outpost stuck on an airless rock somewhere, so something else is coming.

I have a perfectly adequate base that I can move where I want it to be for the cost of a few million credits in upkeep and some Tritium.

Exactly, we spend all this time developing ways to explore and see new sights in the Galaxy, why would you want to tie yourself to another rock?

It does? I don't think so. It needs grant players write access to the database to store those assets that are built. There is no such system. And contrary to common belief it is my firm belief that it isn't a trivial task but a major technical challenge with unsure returns.

You won’t have “write access” any more than you have it when you buy ships, or probably more accurately a carrier, since that is a persistent asset.

Well, we already have bases - our Carriers.
How much multiplayer is done with/around them - except for using them as taxi and/or repair bays and/or commodity markets ?

No PVP possible - which is most of the time what people think of when it comes about multiplayer.

So, i dont think a planetary base, player owned, would be implemented under the current circumstances - aka where a missile boat can camp above, spraying dumbfires and killing even people inside buildings

That's a different point, though. "There's not much multiplayer use of carriers which relies on same instance presence" is true, but hardly an argument that base-building isn't practical, because most of the base-building suggestions don't rely on same instance presence either.

My point is "the game being occasionally multiplayer doesn't stop base-building being implemented" not "I can think of lots of fun specifically-multiplayer stuff to do with bases"

Why is that a problem specific to base building? That could happen when you share a mission to an NPC base too (and either is pretty unlikely in practice)

An NPC base would be less likely to be specifically targeted as it would be a player owned based.
KOS lists do exist for players, but who cares about a random NPC settlement?

Also, doing stuff in Solo/PG is a strong enough protection for anyone, but who would want to deal with "open only bases" and "forcing people into solo/pg"

So you build your base, settle down and watch the sun set over the mud

Or you can look out the window and see sunsets like these

Which do you prefer? 🤷‍♂️

For a while now I've been stockpiling Enhanced Interrogation Techniques, Espionage Materials, Interrogation Recordings, Kompromat and Spyware because the game is clearly going to add an expansion where I can become a spymaster to the exciting faction gameplay, sending out my NPCs to do all sort of interesting missions. It's going to have an amazing effect on the BGS and upcoming Powerplay revamp.
