Player Tips: How do you prepare for New Updates/Patches/DLC?

I'm fairly new to gaming (bought a brand new computer in July just so I could play our beloved Planet Zoo!), and I would love to hear any tips or strategies that players have for preparing for new Updates, Patches, or DLCs? They can be based on past updates from Planet Zoo that you've learned from, experiences with planet coaster or other frontier games, or even just things you've picked up from other games entirely that have become standard practice for you. Hoping these can be positive and helpful!

This could be creative ideas (planning out new maps or habitats, revamping existing parts of your zoo to fit something in). Or outside research that you like to do on the new animals. Or even tips you've discovered about saving or backing up your files on Steam or your Hard Drive prior to a big update?

Or it could be gameplay mechanics that you try to standardize and "complete" before the new stuff becomes available, so that you can focus more intently on those once they arrive. For example, a special pass over all your animals to make sure their welfare is excellent and they don't have any problems before the new arrivals come. Or a review of your education, paths, and workzones in preparation for the Animal Talks?

I would also be interested if any franchise/challenge mode players have suggestions for things they do to shore up their cash (or staffing or whatever else) in preparation for any unexpected changes to the way the game works. Do you use the week between announcement and update to build up a surplus, just in case the changes to the paths/barriers/feeding/staff/protesters/etc. cause you to be losing money for a while? Do you focus on guest happiness, or education, or staff zones, in a way that you wouldn't typically do?

Do you start planning your habitats now, or do you wait to see what the zoopedia requirements are first? Similarly, are you someone who dives right in, or do you wait and watch the forums/youtubes to see how the new mechanisms are put together and anticipate if there might be things to be aware of before opening your most precious masterpiece zoo? And if you're a normal franchise/challenge player, do you try the new pieces/animals/mechanics out in your franchise/challenge zoo right off the bat, or take them to sandbox for experimentation first?

Personally, I think I may focus this next week on building up more of a budgetary surplus in my franchise zoos in case there is an emergency (I'm doing fine in all of my zoos. But I tend to run them more like a non-profit than like a tycoon, valuing animals over profits, adopting new animals as soon as I can get habitats ready for them, and perhaps not leaving enough of a cushion for a rainy day. Which could hurt me if anything in the new update goes unexpectedly for a while).

I'll probably halt adoption or placement of any "new to me" species a few days before the dlc/update comes, so that everything in my zoos are things I'm familiar with, and I'm not struggling to learn too many new things at once.

I think I'll probably do an animal pass through all the habitats to cull the herd on the day before the dlc/update comes, so that I'm not getting overcrowding or other alerts while trying to play with the new pieces & animals. (I saw Rudi do this in one of his videos and it made a lot of sense to me.)

And I may also try to clean out my storage center so I have more freedom to adopt some of each of the new species we're getting.

Oh -- And I'll reassign a five-star mechanic or two for Workshop Research -- since we know we're getting new pieces and the water temperature regulator!

So, anything you'll be doing in preparation for our day of celebration on December 8, that might be helpful for other players to consider?

(Realizing that some of the examples I gave may be too specific to franchise mode since that's what I usually play and am most familiar with. But I just use these as an example and I really am interested in any tips, tricks or strategies from players of all modes!)

I don't expect any fundamental changes in basic game mechanics, so I don't do any preparation ingame. But having a financial buffer is always a good idea. I think it was with patch 1.1 when frontier introduced the guest refunds mechanic which send a lot of the franchise zoos into bankruptcy. But now, we have the option to change the difficulty to easy if things are going bad, so I am not worried.

I would not build any habitats in franchize yet, because we dont know the animals welfare requirements. Instead, I do some research on real life habitats to get inspiration and fill the ideas file on my PC. I don't play much PZ, but I am probably going to scout my zoos for decent educator spots.

When the update drops, I will research the new pieces with a smaller zoo, so it won't take too long. My big zoo with 300 is usually played in pause mode ;-)

I don't usually do any special preparations, but for this one, I am thinking of starting a new zoo in franchise mode (I play almost exclusively in franchise mode), lay the groundwork, train staff to 5 stars, assign areas of my zoo, and that sort of stuff. I'm planning on making a semi-aquatic park, and am thinking of starting with animals that we have in the game and like to spend lots of time in the water (gharials, crocs, hippos, etc). I won't do any theming or decorating at all until the pack releases because I want to use as many of the new building pieces as possible, and also to see how I can combine the new pieces and the ones we have in the game right now.

I usually don't have any financial issues because even on hard mode, I find it's quite easy to make a lot of money. However, I am still planning to give myself a bit of a financial buffer just in case the care for the new animals proves to be expensive.

I usually go into sandbox mode and try to get a good overview of all the new scenery and building pieces, but this time I think I will just do that in the franchise zoo. I'll try to roughly plan the habitats for the new animals. For example, I'm thinking of making a crocodilian house which will keep the gharial, saltwater crocodile, and the new caiman. I will also try to make paths and podiums for animal talks which I'm very excited about.

I will definitely watch some Youtube videos about the pack because I like to hear what others have to say. I will be on the forums and on Reddit, just celebrating and having fun together while we explore the pack. :)

- Firstly, clear my schedule because on drop day I'm not going to want to stop for anything. xD

- Also like you said, I make sure I have plenty of space in my Franchise storage because I'll be heading right to Franchise first thing.

- Try not to make any big purchases, especially of CC, so I have plenty to get all the new animals.

- Break out my zoo notebook and glitter pens and adjust all my animal plans for every zoo. I have every zoo I want to do in there, together with animals I want in each one. Every time a new DLC comes out, the lists get amended! :D

- Similarly, I'll be adjusting my fandom animal list, now. When I get a perfect animal, I like to name it after some character I like. So when we get new animals, I adjust that list too in preparation!

I'm gonna be honest, I did not read your entire original post. For me, I'm taking a month of from the game. I havent launched the game since early November and wont launch it until I've purchased the Aquatic Pack. For you, if you already have a zoo, I would start to edit some areas and plan out new ones for your new animals to go into. Definitely make some room available and maybe relocate some animals to better fit in with the new pack animals.

As for me, I'm watching a series on Disney+ called "Secrets of the Zoo" which there are three different series: Down Under, at Toronga Zoo in Sydney, Tampa, in Tampa, US, and one at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Really great series, in would highly recommend. Also, I've completed "Secrets of "Disney's Animal Kingdom" also on Disney+, another great one. If your a sandbox player, these are great for looking into backstage areas, and holding areas for animals. And if your a Franchise player, it gives you great ideas for new habitat ideas, and it could be as simple as rock placement and barriers.

Bottom line is inspiration though. Have an idea and go with it. I'm planning a Florida Reptile Park in Franchise mode next week and I'm looking up real reptile parks and zoos in Florida for inspiration. This can be applied to pretty much anything. Also YouTube videos of Planet Zoo creators will definitely help. Inspiration and thinking!

Love all these ideas!

While I have a main franchise zoo that I'd like to add these animals to eventually, I'm thinking that I may decide to start a new franchise zoo just for these. Mostly that's because of lag on my main one. I still love playing in it and adding animals (would love to get them all in if I can manage it), but I play largely on pause and then toggle to play when I need money. So I'm thinking a new zoo will let me experiement a bit more and watch the new animations a bit more relaxed, and then add them into my main zoo at a later point, in various spots. Also partially because I have plans for what's "next" in each of my areas that were thought of before the dlc was announced, so am not sure if I want to adjust those or build in a new part of the park.

I'm still building out my South American section from that DLC, so I may re-design that a bit to have the caimans and otters be part of that section of the zoo, and then put the penguins and seals over by the polar bear section. Basically splitting up this pack instead of having a designated "aquatic" area.

As far as I can tell, the natural habitat for the terrapin don't match any of our current habitat species. So I may place them close to the timberwolves, or may reserve a space in hopes that future dlcs will bring more animals from north america. (A pack that I imagine will come at some point, so patience might work in my favor!)

Hooooooooo goodness, how do I prepare... First I have to draft up a plan of what would be posted when, that can take a couple of weeks to finalise. Then on to lots of forum post writing, that can take a while. Of course, I have to write the social, that can take some time to organise. Let's not forget all the meetings and whatnot too. And then livestream planning! (Yes, we'll be live for an Aquatic Pack showcase next week, make sure to check out social to find out when!) .........oh wait, I misunderstood 😇

In all honesty, there are some great ideas in this thread! I love seeing people post their plans when we announce a new pack, I am in a few Discords and really enjoy seeing people share their templates of habitats, how guests would move around them, and what size they're going for. It's really interesting to see how people prepare for a new Pack, and for us it's awesome to see how the hard work on development side gets translated into lots of planning for the community!

I don't do much, at least not preparing habitats or anything - because I want to use the new stuff for that after release. But I look around in the zoo that I am playing in order to find a location for the new species, and some times I also draft ideas for entirely new parcs.

After launch, I go into my "testing area"-savegame and check out the new animals and pieces. And then I jump back into my actual zoo and include the stuff into my normal play. And I watch maaaany videos on Youtube to get more inspired.

In this specific case I'm in the same boat as Mutso. I haven't played in a long time so I'll need to refamiliarise myself with certain features, especially underwater viewing windows.

My plan is basically to spend some time this weekend getting the beginnings of a (Sandbox) zoo off the ground so when the pack drops (here it will be the 9th rather than the 8th) I can dive right in (no pun intended, but I am going to own it) without much fuss.

Love to hear the behind the scenes! Thank you for all the work that you and the whole team put into these. I think the community outreach has been very successful, because we are all totally HYPED for this new dlc and 1.4 update and all of the options that they will bring to the game!
