Playing Both Sides

I've noticed I can progress in both Federation and Empire. Is there going to come a point when I have to choose? Surely I should only be allowed to do one or the other?

The way I see it, and think it works in theory, is that if you do missions from one faction that negatively affects the other, you will see reputation effects and in theory could get to unfriendly and hostile territory with them. But if you are choosing missions that help the Empire, without being harmful to the Federation, and vice versa, I don't see why they should get you to choose. technically, you are merely a freelance contractor working to make ends meat, not an official employee or representative of the Empire or the Federation.

If however, the game allows you to destroy multiple Feds and have them simply go "well, you were doing an Empire mission at the time, no biggie", I would say that it needs to be fixed/modified.

I agree with simon here.
There's no reason why you cannot gain reputation with both factions if you just make sure not to go after targets that are allied to the federation or the empire. But maybe higher ranks that allow things like faction specific ships should force players to choose who to ally to.

Sorry, I should've been more specific. I mean the ranks, I've joined the Federation and Imperial Navy and can do jobs for both. I agree with what you both say that if it doesn't impact on the other etc, but if I join one fleet, surely the other should drop me? Perhaps a warning to say "You are about to attempt to join XXX Navy, if you complete this missions any rank you have with XXX Navy will be lost."

That's a delicate balancing act on the part of the devs in my opinion. On the one hand: it could be reasonable that joining X that is an enemy of Y would make you lose progress in Y. But on the other hand: No doubt that the forums would then be filled with "What gives I just accepted a mission and now I lost a month of naval progress with Y" threads all the time.

I still stand by my opinion that it should only affect it if you do damaging missions for the opposing faction

I maybe like the idea of a mechanic whereby at a certain point one Navy will say "I note that you are currently a XXXX with the XXXX navy. I'm afraid if you wish to take further missions with us you must resign your commission with them".

Id say the further up one tree you are, the earlier that comes on the other.
