Playing Elite on the go.

I know one of the Elite Commandments is, 'though shalt not test thy Braben', but since it was suggested in a recent newsletter (and I was stuck in an empty office - shhh ), I thought I would give playing Elite over a tethered connection a go.

It works well! With a couple provisos...

With a ping of 450m/s, a jitter of 70m/s, and an overall quality and speed rating of F-, I thought it best to do the decent thing for the rest of the community and play Solo Online!

You need a decent data package, as a 4-5hr session uses roughly 100MB of data.

Certainly wouldn't recommend it as someone's primary Elite experience, but as an occasional thing, while away from home, it works pretty well.

Anyone else tried it, and have you braved Open Online with it?

100 MB for 5 hours doesn't sound too bad...thats 20MB for each hour of play...though I'd assume it can vary if you play in Open.

I think that also means that players with slow connections shouldn't have too much trouble in Solo play. Though, my opinion is a bit skewed by having 1GB up/down for the last couple years.

Also, at that rate, I could get a lot of time in using my mobile data plan which caps at 3GB...

Now, just need to wait for ED Mac so I can install it on the wife's macbook air

Good research, I remember once when I had a boss that was huge into gaming, we would play WoW in the office from time to time using out tethered connections and we had a similar outcome. It was do-able and mostly enjoyable, albeit not ideal. It would appear that playing solo should be fairly fun with a tethered set up.

BTW, this is part of the reason I kept my unlimited data plan, so I don't have to worry about data caps.

Awesome. I use my tethering all the time and it works a treat, but haven't really tried gaming on it yet. Got a double data plan though so that sort of bandwidth I could play all month. Wonder what the best HOTAS is for a train table

I've been on a dongle modem since the start, and when I use up the data on that I tether to my phone. Unfortunately I haven't much choice as I work away from home.
It has been difficult in the betas but the gamma seems fine I only get stuttering when close to planets, especially planets with rings.

Jealous of you guys with higher data allowances, I only get 1GB, and I've used a third of that in two days! I think ED might be responsible for my getting a new talk-plan (as well as the Hotas, trackIR, headset...).

Hey Brad, AFAIK, that is a known issue that doesn't have much to do with your connection, I get that at home and I have 50MB cable, so hopefully that will get resolved.
