Newcomer / Intro Playing on a 3D TV Question?.

Probably a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway. I have a 42" Panasonic 3DTV and a matching 3D Blu-Ray Player with a 6.1 Surround Sound system. Is it possible to play Elite: Dangerous using this instead of a standard PC monitor. I also have the powered 3D glasses for viewing in 3D.

Short answer yes
Longer answer, definitely yes.

Longer answer still, it'll cost you, sorry. Hooking up a PC (for any game, ED or otherwise) to your TV should just be a case of plugging the HDMI output from your graphics card to the telly. Depending on your sound system, it may have a HDMI input that would then go on to the TV and you've got full surround as well. So far, so simple.

But neither NVidia nor AMD think that they should include 3D support with their graphics drivers as standard; both make you pay extra for the privilege. NVidia's system is called "3DTV Play", has to be bought from their own website and costs $40. Yes. Really. I don't know the details of AMD's, but I believe it's roughly as expensive. Neither works with every game, but I believe ED's one of those that does; there's at least a 14-day free trial on the same site (just google "nvidia 3dtv play"; unfortunately as a newbie I can't add URLs yet, sorry).

Personally, I don't think it's worth the money by a long chalk, but 2D through the big telly and amp is great fun.

Thanks for the reply, the Blu-ray player is a home theatre in a box system which is why I mentioned it in my op (for the attention of smart a**e above, lol) so the sound will work fine the tv has a dedicated usb slot for attaching a hard drive. The graphics card and cpu are both AMD. I will check out what you said and thanks again for the reply.

Elite Dangerous has built-in support for stereoscopic 3D (in the graphics menu) and you shouldn't need to purchase anything extra to play in this mode. I know, I play it in 3D now and then on my 3D monitor.

I suppose it all depends on what type of stereoscopic 3D your TV supports and that's when my knowledge fails me in helping you any further. I don't know too much about how 3D works.

I'd say give it a whirl and see what you get...

Really? Consider my interest piqued; I'll install it on the PC by the telly as soon as I get a chance, and see what happens...

Not that i'm sure but isn't the 3D technology in the monitors diffrent then the TV technology?
Thats the reason why monitor glasses don't suit on the TV's.. (samy)

I downloaded the following 3D Elite: Dangerous video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kcn7FlpWkYs from a poster on You Tube. It was a side by side 3D in the mp4. format which I converted to an avi. using Format Factory. I Copied it onto a usb memory stick and it plays perfect through my blu-ray and tv, using the powered glasses which came with the tv.. I can see it would really be amazing to play the game in 3D on the big screen.

Ah, I see - so Elite Dangerous actually has its own 3D built in, without having to go through the NVidia drivers to do it. Well, in that case it should work fine!

I play with a Samsung 60in 3d led tv through hdmi. I use samsungs 3d glasses / system with no problems. Couldnt get nvidia or the game's 3d features to work. So yes, it works fine and looks great.
