Playing the scratch-off lotto with a spaceship

Is the "just one more jump" obsession, despite the likely lack of payoff in that next star, similar to buying scratch-off lottery tickets?

It's never like you really know if you are about to enter a system with lots of interesting things. Or just rocks. Or not even rocks.

I've been questioning myself why I forge through this mostly procedurally-generated simulation of our galaxy with interest in finding the one of thirty-some or so different varieties of stars and planets. Well, it's still fun for now but I can see how some folks that have been doing it for a while have a waning interest. Just found myself jumping from star-to-star tonight out in the middle of nowhere with no tourist destination in mind and no neutron destination to farm feeling like I was scratching off lotto tickets hoping for that ELW or watergiant or ammonia world payoff.

That's a good comparison. The ratio good systems vs bad systems is just so you get just enough motivation to want to discover that next system but they're far enough apart to keep them special(ish)

It's the only motivator for me as well now. I stopped going up close and personal with planets, I stopped faffing around systems, I stopped setting goals for myself (find an ringed object with it's ring both being level with the milky way band of stars and pointing towards the sun, so I can take a picture of the sun shining though all the asteroids while being framed by the milky way itself).

But I can feel it getting less and less of a motivator. Lets say I'm not going to be occupied with this method for months to come. A serious upgrade needs to happen, or I'll be dusting off Civilisation or Tropico soon.

There's a ringed ELW with city lights on the dark side out there somewhere....its always just one more jump away.
