Playing With Black Holes

Hi community!

I visited a system with 3 black holes a little while back and played around with them. If you haven't yet seen a black hole and would consider a video to be a spoiler, then don't watch the video below. But, there's good footage for whoever wants to see :)

At around 5:30 into the video, I have an unexpected encounter with another ship. Didn't get violent, it was just very strange.

Anyways, I hope you all enjoy :)

Surprised no one has replied to this yet. Anyways, I'd be curious to see what happens when you fly into the black hole :p

BODY EXCLUSION ZONE, no way to fly straight in. Some of the bigger ones may still cook you befor you get to the BEZ.

I think the emergency mass lock on frameshift drops you out far enough away that you would never get to the event horizon in realspace in a reasonable time.

well that's a bit disappointing. I hope they change that so its a big more accurate. I was expecting the ship to get locked in its gravity at a certain point, or at least explode once the black hole's gravity grabs the ship.

Hi folks :) Thanks for checking out and commenting on my video!

Like someone else said, when you get within a certain distance (I think this varies depending on the mass of the BH) you'll hit a body exclusion zone, like when you get too close to a planet. At first, BHs in Elite Dangerous emitted heat, which made them hazardous to approach. I think they still emit heat, but its not enough to hurt you or anything.

Concerning the other missing effects of a BH: I'm surprised gravity doesn't play a bigger role. In Evochron Mercenary, the physics of BHs seemed more in line with what you'd expect. At a certain distance, the BH's gravity would start pulling on your ship. The closer you got, the harder it was to escape. And if you hit the event horizon, you exploded. That last bit might not be what you'd actually experience if you hit the event horizon (theories vary), and I think the ED devs could really be creative by trying to realistically or dramatically create certain effects, like spaghettification, slowing of time, etc. FD did do a great job with the ambient music while near a BH, though. Makes for a very eerie atmosphere.

Others have suggested that FD needs to get creative with the black holes, and I agree. They did great with the distortion of non-local stars/objects, but BHs need more. I'm sure it's in FD's plans, with the body exclusion zones being placemarkers (like they are with planets ATM). In the coming weeks and months, I expect a lot of changes will occur :)

Thanks again for checking out my video! :D

Well that answers my question. Nice to see it, thanks.

So someone at FD has a job, just making, studying, researching and hopefully explaining: Holes?

Arry.

lol I doubt there's a "hole theorist" on FD's payroll :D But David Braben seems to be a science buff so I don't doubt he thinks about such things concerning his game. If I had a successful space game, I'd be constantly thinking of new, strange objects and their possible effects and hazards.

Something else we need is stars going nova. Imagine that :D

Personally i was a bit disappointed with black holes. I thought they would be threatening. They should cause some damage. Also massive interference with the ship systems would have been cool, like stuff shutting down etc. Also loved the disney black hole though im sure its not accurate visually its stunning idea.
