Playing with XBOX players?

Regardless of XBOX player stereotypes, supposed disadvantages of using XBOX controllers without any other options, the main issue- as I see it- is communication. I'm sure there's some sort of XBOX keyboard accessory, but as it happens, the vast majority of all XBOX players don't have such a device- and I'm fairly certain they're not going to buy it just for this game. In other words; how will XBOX players communicate with the rest of us? By navigating an on-screen keyboard with the controller?

Which brings me to a separate (but related) issue: Even if they're alone, how will they communicate with each other? Would that still be considered an "authentic Elite experience"?

... headset... maybe?

A headset for the Xbox is usually fairly cheap, and the preferred method of communication for them. I think my 360 actually came with one to begin with iirc.

They probably won't share the same galaxy as us and Mac.

But something you should be aware of, X box players tend to embrace the use of headset communications much more readily than Pc users do.

We have keyboards. They don't. But all of their online games support voice comms and pretty much every console is sold with a headset these days.

I wouldn't worry for them. They'll be fine.

Oh and they're not really at much of a disadvantage with controllers. This isn't an FPS.

Yes, but in this case it wouldn't just be a preference, it'd be a requirement. They'd also have to call players individually- as opposed to just sending them a simple, text-based message or talking through local chat.

Yup the XB1 comes with a headset that plugs into the controller. It's absolute junk though, but even that is better than the ear-gouger that Sony bundles with the PS4.

Console play is going to be amusing, I wonder if the usual delights of chat will carry over, and if many players feel it's COD with spaceships. Looking forward to it anyway.

My understanding was we would all share the same universe. They are working with Xbox to see if we would be able to see them or not, but they would have the same universe and be able to influence it the same. We just might not be able to see them. Like a giant Xbox private group that only Xbox members can access.

The XboxOne comes with a headset as standard which connects to the controller, so is automagically wireless. Yesterday's Xbox firmware upgrade added voice messaging as well as live voice comms too, so you can send a 15 second (I think) voice message to anyone on your friends list out-of-game. Plugging in a wireless keyboard is trivial. Lots of USB ports on the XBO, and HID is plug'n'play.

There can be no stereotype this far into the 21st Century. No, really. I'm 46 and have a gaming PC beside my XBO, and use the gaming PC only for ED. If you haven't played a current gen console, they are totally stunning, and the issues I've had with my PC (getting 1080P to work on my older TV, getting surround to work over optical on my amp for example) are a non-issue on a console for obvious reasons. But even the top games on the previous gen (and I do just mean a few, e.g. Crysis 2, GTA V) pushed things to a level that was amazing for 8 year-old hardware.

The background sim will be the same, but as XBO updates take longer to implement as they must be signed/approved by Microsoft, ED will have a split universe. XB players won't "see" PC/Mac players and vice versa. It'll be interesting to play, as I'll have both on the same controller and same TV side-by-side.

Because this is an MMO, which means that more players in open, the better, regardless of their skill level.

I can't see how this will be any less messy than typing chat to more than one commander is.

Select comms, select pilot, start talking.

To be honest, I reckon it'll be easier to incorporate into the ui.

That's cool but I did mean actually being able to see others.

I'd like it, mind. The more the merrier. It's just not common for cross platform games to share, certainly not between console and pc.

We'll see. It'd be good if they pull it off.

I think it would be awesome to go up against a xbox player, would be really nice if FD would maybe color code the Commanders name for the platform they were playing on. Maybe blue for pc, pink for Mac and green for xbox players. Never know, xbox players may be able to whoop us pc players with the game pad and all using coms more than likely.

Nice idea... but I'm going with the "not going to happen" side ( Xbox in the same instance/universe as PC/Mac )

It did not happen with World of Tanks ... and I'm doubtful that it will work here either

Back in about 2003 socom for ps2 shipped with a free headset.

Off topic this game is second only to socom at eating my time :)

Yeah I'm positive FD confirmed that while we will all be influencing the same galaxy, we won't be able to interact with console players as they get their own instances.

It's a shame in some ways, but given my experience with consoles; more than half the playerbase will be window lickers or worse.
This is in comparison with the PC community where it's only 40% special needs.

:p

So we're not going to be in the same instance. Are we going to be able to use our same log in though? I could play ED on my Xboxo in the bedroom or on my laptop in the front room, without having to restart my game.
