Playstation 4 directional down button

I've been wondering if anyone has been having trouble with the down directional button not working coreectly. After I start the game it will work correctly for a while then slowly starts to quit working. I thought it was the controller so I took it apart and cleaned it not once but several times as each time the same problem occurs. I noticed that as soon as I turn the game off and go back to the playstation menu it starts working again.

If it only happens in this game, that suggests a possible key binding issue or conflict, though maybe it only happens in this game due to its' sensitivity settings or maybe that button is wearing out - how old is the pad you're using?...

I've seen pads of mine with buttons wearing out indeed only show that they are initially in certain games due to their particular sensitivity.

Anyway that's my two cents, hope it helps 🤔😀🤘 .

Yep buttons wearing out.
I tried to reset of the controller, and all other games worked OK, but still gave problems on ED (down button for all the menus scrolling).
Logged a repair/return with Sony and sent controller back to Sony who replaced or repaired it (they didn't say which) FOC but it took 4 weeks, so in the meantime I bought a new (Sony Dual Shock) which worked fine, so the button was probs worn out by me on ED!!! (I've logged >5000 hrs playtime).

I now keep the returned one as a spare back-up now, but deliberately and consciously do not press so hard on the Down button.

You can remap the direction buttons but it is then very difficult to play ED especially due to UI scrolling.
Also, if you are a DIY person, you can buy a complete dual shock buttons kit online cheaply, but it is very fiddly to achieve a complete 'as new' controller.

It can just happen with the pad, I doubt it was your fault, I had stick drift and the padding coming off the stick of my first Dualshock 4 on my launch PS4 when I had I less than a year, which I knew was a problem with the pad as I look after my stuff.
(While indeed I believe there was a class action suit aimed at Sony over the lower quality of the launch PS4 pads compared to typical PS controllers and general products.)

As I was, it was some time in 2014 I got the replacement, which has worked perfectly since, while the sticks are still flawless.

All in, I'd say you just had bad luck first time, but hopefully the new one gives you years of trouble-free gaming, best of luck with it 🤔😀🤘.
