PlayStation 4 Elite Dangerous Audio Sound Distortion Glitch Fix.

Hi all,
I am not sure if there is another post on this issue but I think that I have found a simple solution but first let me tell you the problem.

While playing Elite dangerous on my PS4 when I enter the air lock of any orbital station the sound starts to crackle and distort which is very annoying and bad for my speakers.

I have I've tried to turn the audio down through the audio settings but nothing has changed until I changed the optimise for setting to "Night time" in which I had significantly better audio with no crackling or distorted whatsoever. I even went as far as to return all my main audio settings back to maximum and with "Night time" active and no distortion was present.

For those who are wondering I run my PS4 through an amplifier via HDMI and I have two medium 3-way speakers with excellent sound and this doesn't happen with any other game in my collection even from PC.

Thanks for reading have a great one CMDR Hellion1.

No problem here with a 5.2.1-Speaker-Setup and an AVR (Denon 1200W). Audio-Setting on the PS4 Pro is PCM via HDMI.
Seems to be a problem with your audio-system and/or HDMI.

Can't say I have had this issue using headphones or the 5.1 system. I sometimes have sound "drop out" for no apparent reason where sound will stop for a split second. No idea what causes that either. :) (only happens on Elite)

I get that as well, the sound (usually music) just drop for a second randomly.

The last couple of patches have introduced some sound bugs which fdev just blamed on people's surround setups despite working fantastic on mine for almost two years on xbox

I'll try this out the next time it pops up, it only seems to happen with certain ships - most notably my FAS. It can go from heavy crackle in the letterbox to crackling in combat.
Elite is the only thing that does it, it's not my TV or soundbar. Turning off the PS4 (not rest) fixes it for a while, I'll see if night time audio settings fix it, thanks!

Yeah I only have two ships the ASP Explorer and the Federal Dropship and I checked the sound with both ships with the Night Time settings and all is good but when I set the audio to Normal or Boost the Federal Dropship had the crackling or distorted sound.. ;)

I have the sound "drop out" as well but that is due to loading not audio issues and yes it only happens with Elite lol.. I have this game on PC as well as PS4 and the sound "drop out" happens there too.

I figured the sound drops were probably due to loading assets.

I use the full-range output, because I'm lucky enough to have nice 5.1 and nice cans. I haven't noticed any distortion with my kit, but I noticed massive distortion when visiting a friend and using their (cheaper) headphones with the same settings. Full-range takes no prisoners when it comes to your audio setup, or the connections you use. Switching to the night-time settings, the cheaper 'phones were fine.

Theres so many options I think its probably very easy to set it up so it doesnt work well, it does warn you wrong set up can damage speakers, theres the PS4 settings and the game settings,

I use an optical cable, sounds great, the walls vibrate when I honk

Unfortunately different settings don't fix the problem for me, I've submitted a bug report so hopefully Frontier can figure out what the problem is. I included a capture of the distortion as well, which shows it is an in-game problem and not a cable/speaker issue - the sound would playback fine on the capture on other devices otherwise.

Sorry for bumping an "old" thread.

This has been driving me crazy since yesterday. I'd ruled out my USB hub, stereo and Headset. I assumed it was a problem processing as it happens when flying through the startport airlock or in battle where there are many laser beams.

But then I played back a video and it was there too, even on other devices so it's definitely in game.

...and what happened yesterday that changed? Yes, I bought the FAS

Yes I have found the same problem so I submitted a ticket and hopefully the devs can figure out what is causing it and fix it in an update.. I thought changing the optimise for setting to "Night time" would fix the issue but all it did is temporally fix it as I am getting the sound distortion still. I will let you guys know what happens with the ticket as soon as I get any info.

Thanks CMDR Hellion1

Thank you. Feel free to send them my YouTube video if it helps.

The night mode didn't help for me unfortunately

I have also had / continue to have audio issues - particularly with the left and right HUDS which buzz persistently and annoyingly when opened.

Re: sound in general - i tried fiddling with the night time etc settings and they are defo screwy. The general one was quietest, the night time one was ridiculously loud across some features and the third option (i cant remember) was flat across the board. The general setting is the most well balanced for me so i just tweak my TV / headset volume instead - its just easier.

The short audio drop-outs are present on the PC as well and have been for some time now. I don't know what causes them. I don't use the same speakers or anything that I use for the PS4. I've just learned to ignore it as it's very brief.

The sound distortion is definitely specific to the PS4, and it doesn't seem to be ship dependent as I get it periodically on the Type-6, the Python, and iirc it has happened with my Eagle as well. If I attempt to clear it by changing audio settings nothing has worked and the only sure fire way to clear it is with a relog. I don't bother with that though as it typically will clear itself with a docking or location change etc. My PS4 is only connected to the TV and I use the TV speakers do I don't think it's an equipment issue unless it's in the HDMI handshaking.

Peculiar. For me it only happens on my FAS. ..and it's pretty bad too.

But if it saves to video, then you can rule out all hardware
