PlayStation plus

Hi Cmdrs,

I've looked (with man eyes) for the answer but no luck finding it. Quick question, do I need to need to be a PS plus member to be able to play ED?

I'm currently a member as I played Rainbow 6 but as it's cost is going up to £50 per year I'm thinking of dropping it as I don't really play much else apart from ED.

Thanks,

Cmdr Colt

I'll be picking up a year sub card before the hike but I'll Deffo be canceling my auto renew and I'd recommend people do the same to send Sony a message about this :(

Without wanting to start a console flame war I've found the psn to be inferior to xbox live and the free games rubbish in comparison! How the hell they can justify charging more than xbox live is beyond me!

I used to be able to justify the £39.99 but another £10 a year is rude. I like your idea and I think I'll cancel the auto renew when I get home.

Thanks for the advice.

Did they up the prices? I usually just grab a 3 month voucher, $27aud, and buy another as needed. Which isn't very often to be honest.

Nope, you can play in solo mode, which means you won't see other human players in the game, but unless you frequent CGs and POIs, it's pretty rare to see human players anyway (it's a big galaxy). If I didn't already have PS+, I would not pay for it just for ED - but that's just me.

BTW, you do have access to CGs and the shared galaxy in solo mode. Your name will show up on first discoveries, and your contributions to factions will affect the BGS.

The world moves on, and so does inflation. Even at £50/annum, PS+ still represents good value to me at less than 15p/day. As for the free games, I think PS+ is gaining ground on XBL - Until Dawn last month and Just Cause 3 for August - these are both titles that I intended to buy when the price dropped to a tenner, but now I have them included in my membership. Nice.

That said, I've played nothing but ED since its release :)

Its gone up quite a lot, about a 20% increase, its like ripping off children, evil

I would love to play ED online, but £50 a year just for really 1 game, and a 40gb a month data cap means i cant anyway as can never download the free games, heck even patches is a struggle to save the limit to download, i have 3 waiting of a total of 35gb. Price i pay for rural living

It's becoming a rip off. On PS3 it made sense because you got awesome games but on PS4 it has become a huge rip off. The only thing Plus I use is saving back ups and multiplayer. I remember getting free multiplayer on PS3 so I don't see how they can even justify a price hike on PS4 without improving the Plus service because since my with to PS4 it has become Minus instead of Plus

More on topic: yes you can play ED without Plus.

the best thing about ps3 being free meant everyone with a ps could play online, so nobody was excluded and more peole give it a go, so larger communities

I only got a monthly one, cos I only play ED and I wasnt sure how much I'd play or whether I would just stick to solo, the amount of people I see I might as well gone solo

Are monthly games the same globally? Still the July games listed here in Australia, but I certainly wouldn't mind another bash at Just Cause 3 if its included in ps+ here in the next few days.

Most are average at best, but every now and then, theres a lil' nugget of gold. Still haven't gotten 'round to playing Journey, yet.

I have never paid full price for PS Plus or XBL ever, if you can work out how to use it then I highly suggest you try using something called the internet.
You might have to meet some men in black type characters and slip them a few coins but it's totally worth it.
Try and get something on the internet called Google it will help you find cheap things.

If the games they start giving out on PS Plus are of the same quality as July and the upcoming August ones I am happy to pay extra.

I rarely pay full price although I ordered ps+ this time around whilst slightly merry near Xmas lol ;) as for the free games they really are crap! Next month they're giving us a standalone DLC for assassins creed black flag! Xbox live gave us the FULL assassins creed black flag over two years ago lol!

Corporate greed! ;)

It seems the biggest draw to open and private group play is the ability to form wings. I have found this to be "The best of experiences, the worst of experiences." Some of my most favorite combat gameplay has been fighting alongside others in a good wing. However, I've been in my share of crappy wings where novice players pick fights with ships that greatly outclass them, and then they bug out leaving me to hold the bullseye... Just like all multiplayer games, there is a surprising percentage of people who don't understand what "team" means. My bad experiences of winging up with random people are starting to overshadow the good, so my tendency to join these wings is decreasing, unless the wing is made up of "master" combat players or people I know in-game.

I say all this so you have an idea what you're missing (or not) on the multiplayer side of Elite Dangerous.

I play in open on the pc and PS4 but rarely see another commander and if I do they soon disappear or ignore me anyway. But it is nice to see the odd hollow icon floating around. I'm going to use my PS4 account as an explorer account when I have enough to buy a DBX so playing in solo won't make much difference.

Thanks for all your replies and I have a few things to consider. Cheers.

My sidekick has gone exploring so I'm busy engineering an Anaconda to Ludicrous Standards (tm). Once complete I'm very happy trying winging up with you, Duckie. I certainly won't 'bug out'!
