Please add third person UI for meaningful gameplay

I know there are options to control your ship today in third person however there’s no UI so meaningful gameplay isn’t possible.

The game is truly beautiful so knowing VR isn’t a focus, but we are already halfway there for third person...Let’s discuss Fdevs offering a third person UI for meaningful gameplay.

This would be nice for the upcoming gameplay too but hoping to ask for this as it seems little work is needed.

I play this game because it isn't in 3rd person (I couldn't get into EVE mainly because of that). It's nice we can make screenshots outside of our ship, but controlling it that way? Meh.
I don't care how you want to play it, but wouldn't it become a problem for PvP, favouring the 3rd person view?

That and immersion. I believe it was mentioned in '14.
Those are both excellent reasons to not have it, imo.

The camera we have was reluctantly added but only with the strict caveat that it not allow 3rd person game play. It's purely there for beauty shots.

What you want, the devs have been very clear about: it's not happening.

I think 3rd person, flying a spaceship, particularly in a CZ or other combat, would be a distinct disadvantage in positioning the ship to actually hit something...
In my opinion not a view I'd find in the least useful.

It's a space flight sim. There is no need nor place for the 3rd person perspective - what exists is a camera for taking pretty pictures. And what, pray tell, would be this 'meaningful gameplay' that doesn't already exist?

Who says VR isn't a focus? It's not planned for Odyssey at launch, they are working on it. Again, what 'meaningful gameplay' are you referring to?

Little work? That demonstrates how little you understand your suggestion. Every UI element that you want in 3PP would need to be created/modified to work in 3PP - or un the risk of looking like a 90's game refugee. And again with the gameplay.. What productive features would it add?

But of course, you are another one of those armchair devs, who had never so much as installed Source or UnrealEd, let alone actually done any development - but you know how easy it is to add a completely new 'feature' to an existing game engine.

Wouldnt be any more immersion breaking than the camera we already have, hell if you really want to you can already play the game that way, it's how I mine.

But it's fine if it never happens, too.

I can't see how changing the perspective creates new game play, let alone anything approaching new meaningful game play.

OP, you might wanna try out Everspace. One of my favorite games of all time. It has pretty amazing cockpit view, but also fully featured 3rd person! And there is endless, challenging and meaningful gameplay to boot with vistas you would never even dream to see in Elite! It also might have VR support, not sure tho.

The reason we have the current camera controls is because in the early days if you wanted to take a screenshot outside of first person you had to use the "Debug Camera" which had clunky controls as it was only intended for debugging purposes. FDev saw this was happening, updated it, and made it much more user friendly to use. As you say it was only ever intended for taking photos or videos, not for general use.

I would actually go a step in the opposite direction and remove the stupid 3rd person multicrew gunner camera. Was so looking forward to multicrew but the implementation is so cheap and immersion breaking i never want to use it
