Please advise me on what ship I should take on DW3, if/when it happens

Basically I’m down to 2 options at this point:

1) My Anaconda “Intrepid”. I’m leaning heavily towards taking this ship because I took her on DW2 and there’s all the nostalgia - this alone might make the decision in the end. She’s been all over the galaxy and she’s fully loaded. 2x AFMUs (yes I know 1 is sufficient but I have room), c4 corrosion resistant cargo rack, SRV, repair limpet, heat sinks, fuel transfer limpet, research limpet, shield, detailed surface scanner, and a collector limpet which is not expected to be needed. 82+ LY jump range.

2) Mandalay. Things in favor of this ship are running cooler (but Intrepid doesn’t normally have heat problems), superior SCO performance, better cockpit view, much better SC maneuverability, slightly better jump range (but this doesn’t matter much to me).

What say you?

Having done DW1 in an Anaconda, never again.

If you're not taking your fleet on a FC, then probably best is a medium or small sized ship for landing and planetary shenanigans. DW doesn't usually go at such a pace you can't easily keep up with a few hours a week and reasonable jump range, and if you do get tired, this time you'll be able to park on a participating FC and take a break.

Mandalay is a fine choice, but there's going to be soooo many of them its not going to be funny.

By the way, the Type 7 makes a surprisingly decent exploration ship.

Hey, you could go for the nostalgia, but keep a second (third, etc) ship on hand. After the first time you'll spend minutes looking for a place to land the Anaconda on rough terrain, you'll likely wish to switch to a smaller ship.

The usual argument for using high-end ships in exploration is if you are going to places of stellar scarcity or extreme distance such as the galactic edges, or the highs/deeps.

If you aren't using those functions, then almost any ship will work as long as you are comfortable working in it. I did a lot of exploring in a Dolphin because I enjoyed the view out the cockpit when I wasn't going to places that the Dolphin couldn't jump to.

TLDR; unless you have mission specific requirements such as haulage or mining, go with what you will enjoy in the long term.

If you intend on landing anywhere, the small and medium size ships are better because it's easier to find landing spots for them than it is to find something that's as long as an anaconda or imperial cutter or anything in that range.

.i think it all depends on what you want to do,just to follow the route when given i use a asp/dbx with a decent jump range, fuel scoop, srv, planet scanner, thats it, shield and armour go light,i hope they ltd the fc as with one its no challenge, but every one will have very different opinions,.im going asp its sat ready to go anywhere, served me well over the years, although the mandy is on the next in line,

Asp & Mandy sitting firmly at the top for myself. For exploring multiple star systems with 100k+ ls distances the Mandy's SCO is incredible.
I still have to really try out the CbrV in exploration load out, that might be something to do later...

I am just starting to try this for certain values of exploration build, it feels good so far and the view is superb.

Had a quick jaunt in the CbrV last night. It's a strong competitor for the Mandy in its ability to SCO round a system without worrying and has the edge when looking for Fungoida stetsis in the Inner Orion Spur. Though it's likely to loose that edge once the expedition moves further out.

I saw the Type 7 mentioned. I'm having trouble moving on from the Type 6. I thought the Cobra MkV would be it, since I like smaller ships, and on paper it's almost everything I would have asked for, but there's just something in the design that rubs me the wrong way. Any suggestions for getting out of my rut? Although it's bigger, I was considering the Phantom from an aesthetic point of view...

Also wondering, from those who have been out with multiple-player expeditions recently, what jump range is needed to keep up with the group and not spend all the time jumping? Or, put another way, where's your personal cut-off in the ship list for realistically viable ships, given real-world time constraints?

The Phantom is an excellent exploration ship with room for lots of bits and pieces a very good view, a little large for some landing locations, good cool running.
There is the new Mandalay though I find the height difference between the bottom of the ship and the cockpit viewpoint distracting as I keep bumping into stuff.
For the minimalist there is the Hauler the lack of internal slots and fuel capacity can be an issue, the view is not the best though.

For me I'd pick better cockpit view and the overall look of the cockpit interior, smaller footprint, and better SC handling over raw jump range all day, any day. So if it was me and I had to pick between those two, Mandalay hands down. Context - my favorite exploration ship so far has been the Dolphin, with the iClipper a close second (which I realize is a weird choice).
