CQC Please be gentle... It's my first time.

Hello CMDR's,

I am one of those players who is not happy about the CQC rank showing on my screen. I get told how irrational this is very often. In the recent threads about CQC/Arena I have seen that an increasing number of my fellow explorers use 'it' (CQC) as a fun diversion.

In light of this I have decided to take the plunge and have ago. Now while I'll admit to being a beast in FPS PVP games (Part of the job) I am coming into this as a PvE player.

I'll be online from about 4pm GMT today for my first matches and I was hoping you good folks could give me some tips about how to get the most from playing the game.

If you are unfortunate enough to face me please try not to laugh to hard as I press all the wrong buttons but above all, treat me gently and show some respect after! ;)

Relax! I did the same and made it from rank 1 to 12 in one afternoon. Yes, there were rounds when I simply could not hit anything and always blew up mere seconds after engaging in combat, but you gotta just laugh it off... At the end of each round, you even get encouragement points simply for participation. So every round you play brings progress, sometimes more, sometimes less, but there are never any serious setbacks. Some of the people on CQC are so damn good that you just cannot beat them. But that's okay... concentrate on the weakest ships or simply follow your fellow teammates and assist them in their kills. And don't sweat it. I play with a PS3 controller and am unable to use FAOff, and even I got some kills. You'll be fine.

use your pips , when about to take fire , go all shields , while lined up on the target all to weapons , when legging it all to engines ( or when covering distance to the kill fest ) every second counts .

You can use your boost to do a quicker turn on the target .

Learn where the power ups are and remember the best path to them .

Know where you are in the map ( as much as you can )

Keep killing , there is no guarentee that the guy targeting you will survive to kill you , do not lose your kill , sometimes its worth turning to the guy targeting you but now we are getting all in depth .

I remember losing games hunting for a shield and winning others despite having no shields for the last 4 kills . You will get a feel for it .

Good luck .

Mainly it's down to practice, of course.

Crucial differences from normal play:
- Unlike in normal play, hiding behind something breaks target lock. Use cover and try to avoid being caught in the open. Note that some of the best-looking cover is actually a deathtrap - try it and see!
- Weapon ranges are extremely short compared with normal play - most weapons are 1km range only.
- The only target command which works on hostile ships is "target in front". "target my attacker" or "next target" do not work.

Some more tips:
- The Sidewinder is the Python of the CQC world - if you keep four to systems and time the shield cell use right, people will get bored of trying to kill you and go do something else. You won't get many kills with it, though, because anyone who doesn't want to fight you can easily run away. Great for flying around learning the maps without being bothered too much. You'll get access to all four ships very early on - try them all out and see what works best for you.
- If you see player A chasing player B, then generally you should open fire on player A. Best case, you kill player A, and then can follow it up with a very easy kill on player B too.
- They've recently reduced the damage threshold to get "assists" (half the points of a kill) quite a bit, so don't be too worried if you lose a dogfight - you may well get some points appearing on your score later for it.
- Team Deathmatch can be easier than Free-for-all to start off with: the matches are longer, usually a bit slower paced, and you can get the "win" bonus even as a complete beginner if you get lucky with the team split, with plenty of time to get assists. You will also be on the wrong end of some 25-5 walkovers, though.
- a yellow rank icon means that the player got to rank 50 and restarted from 1 again - possibly more than once. These should be your priority targets: use your judgement as to whether that's for "shooting at", "watching to pick up tips from" or "hiding before they notice you".
- your left panel will let you instantly target active powerups

Don't forget to use the powerups. The single biggest thing you can do to increase your survivability and how dangerous you are is to use the powerups. If you've played arena FPS games (e.g. Quake3) then you'll be familiar with the idea of powerup / map control, and the same ideas absolutely apply to CQC.

Reiterating the most important bit: relax and have fun and enjoy the explosions.

Best of luck in this endeavour, hope it all goes OK. Cannot bring myself to take part but understand those that do find it therapeutic.
