Please can someone help me get my controller to work again.

Hello,

I have about 1200 hours in Elite and have always played with a wireless xbox controller. I took a few months off from the game and now I can not get my Xbox Series X controller to work at all. I have tried changing settings in Steam but I can not get it to work.

Does anyone have exact settings to make it work in Steam?

I have also read that you have to make sure the Elite game screen is in the front or something like that for the controller to work, how would I do that?

Any help please, I wanted to play tonight but have spent the last few hours being frustrated by this.

Edit-

Plugged the controller in by USB type-C and the game sees it again and it works. Tried again wireless and it would not work again. I have always played this wireless with no problems. Maybe it was a game or Windows 10 update that broke something. I have opened 5 other games on steam using my controller wireless and have had no problems in any of them. I'm at a loss.

Guess I will play with my controller plugged in for now. I hope that at least keeps working.

Check the MS forums for that one. The XBox controllers are known to be finicky with respect to a generic Bluetooth connection - the only way to get them to work reliably is to use the XBox wireless adapter.
Other games (like e.g. Cyberpunk 2077) simply switch the control to over to the next signal they receive, be it controller or mouse/kb. Dynamically, constantly and multiple times during each session, if neccessary. ED falls back to kb&m default whenever it loses the connection to the active controller and stays there. On the other hand, games like CP2077 have one, maybe two, mappings for the controller - in ED, you can map any input to any control.

Oh, and there's also a recognized BT issue with some AMD motherboards. Check your board manufacturer's support pages, there may be a new BIOS there. Just... be careful. You can really wreck your computer if that update goes wrong.

My son says the same thing as you did in reference to must utilize the "XBox wireless adapter".
