Please clean my windshield

The effect of the dirty window is really annoying me. What were they thinking? That humans forgot how to use water and a piece of cloth to clean glass without leaving smear all over the place? If I was the pilot, I would simply wipe it off, but alas, no function like that in the game.
As an explorer, I'd love to gaze at the wonderous sights of the galaxy but instead I'm looking at some greyish ... I don't even know what it is supposed to be.

I could rant for ours how bad this idea was, how unrealistic and stupid, but I'd rather not. Just remove the effect, please. Or give me the option to turn it off.

Micrometeorites hitting your windscreen in SC is going to leave a mark. It's no wonder your ship has a fuzzy screen. Those little buggers scar even the hardest metals.

Shadow_Frost, if damage to the windshield really caused occlusion, it should be repairable in a dock.

I'm with OP 100% on this. The designers wanted to add "flavor" or "character" to the ships, but it is just too ridiculous and unrealistic. The streaks and dirt on the windshield need to go.

The most highly polished and perfect surface is going to have scratches on it. That is reality. Glass is not 100% transparant. What you want to avoid, specifically in computer graphics, is "unreal perfection".

i highly doubt that the material is actually made of glass.... would think something along the lines of manufactured diamond or clear aluminum....something to that effect.

It might as well be glass since the ships are protected by an energy field aka the shields. If the shield fails, the window is the first thing to blow. Anyway that leaves dust and micrometeroids out of the question. It's supposed to be smear on the inside, just like you get in your house if you suck at cleaning windows and use a detergent instead of just water. I find this so irritating that I actually cleaned my monitor out of reflex the first time I saw it ingame. Mandrid has it right I believe, the designers just went overboard trying to add 'flavor'.
Please please please remove it, Frontiers.

I like it. I only appears from time to time.

You can't wash a window in space because the liquid water will just boil away in the vacuum, you'd have to wait until you dock.

I'm happy to hear you rant for hours about a dirty window though... would you really devote so much time to ranting if it were a real window?

I agree it should be taken away or at least there should be an option in the "repairs" section for it to be cleaned.

Really. Is this a joke? First of all I think it's one of the coolest things of the cockpit designs. 100% realistic. What gets me really, is that someone starts complaining in a tread for this...but it is a joke right?

It's no a joke, it's actually my biggest gripe with the game (it's a pretty good game imho). How the hell is this realistic? It's not dust on the outside, it's streaks from bad cleaning on the inside. If your car windowshield looks like this, how could you even see a traffic light when the sun is shining on the glass?
I'm aware this is not an issue if your in mostly for dogfighting (could actually be cool - attacking with the sun on your back gives you an advantage) but like I said, I like to travel and explore and maybe take a screenshot from interesting sights ... which I can't most of the time because if the star is in view, or shining from the side, or shining from above my view is obfuscated by streaks. It's not only diminishing my enjoyment of the game, it's even creating frustration.
@carlisle: No, you don't want to hear my monologues everytime I encounter this 'feature'
Take a look at this screenshot from the ED homepage:

and imagine how it would look if you take it right now. There's already an abundance of lensflares and blinding effects, another layer is not needed.

Drive slowly through the spaceport and I'm sure someone will dump some liquid on your window and smudge it and then hastle you for credits if you want realism.
