Please clear up my confusion about superpowers

I’ve been thinking about changing my allegiance from independent to either federation or empire. I’ve tried to figure out how to do that and everyone is saying that you don’t actually choose an allegiance to any of those you just do lots of missions for the one you like. But, when I look at bio page on INARA, it says right there that my allegiance is to independent. Also, I could swear that when I started the game I did make a selection of superpower allegiance. Can someone get this straight for me?

INARA is completely third party, that allegiance selection in your bio is basically just for flavor. You do not make an allegiance selection when creating a new character. If you like a superpower, pledge to one of their political figures through Power Play or just do missions for them.

I believe the only place where you can explicitly specify an allegiance to a superpower (outside of Power Play, I guess) is when you're creating a Squadron. Those can pledge allegiance to superpowers and minor factions as well.

You don't pick allegiance. You're a member of the Pilot's Federation and as such you are a neutral mercenary. INARA allows you to pick your allegiance somewhere in the settings there.

as an actual answer, on your right screen, first tab...select galactic powers, in there you have images of all the leaders of the various groups that all belong to one of the major powers in this screen if you select one to look at and read about them and what they stand for etc..is where you can choose to either join them or defect from them.

As others have said, there is no mechanism in place for "joining" a superpower, and never has been. Back when the game launched, people complained about this, so that is why PowerPlay was introduced - to give people something to "join". But those are Powers, not Superpowers. Each Power is affiliated with a Superpower, but not every supporter of a Power necessarily supports the Superpower - indeed, supporters of Hudson and Winters frequently overthrow Federation Democracies to install Independent governments that are more to their liking. Weird, but true.

It does sound like you are quite new to the whole 'Powers' thing, so to that I would also like to say that even though by now you may have looked at the galactic powers tab, there is a lot to take in from there, so to help a bit...
the first choice often made is to Federation or Empire or Alliance or Independent due to what that name might imply to a person, I originally chose Federation as I am a Trek fan, big mistake this federation is nothing like the trek federation..
The overall take for each Power is a very simple decision and often ends up not as expected.
The next 2 things are more often the real deciding factors, putting universal political and religious beliefs aside, and those are what benefit does each group for each power offer, in there you will see bonus payouts for cartographic data sales, bonus payouts for bounties.
Then the main things that drive most people at one point or another in the game is the physical reward for joining a power, such as prismatic shields, The Imperial Hammer Rail, the Pacifier Frag Cannon, the Packhound Missiles are a few of the popular choices which often lead to at least a temporary pledge to a member of one of the Powers.
I hope that helps...most all the info you need to be able to decide is in the Galactic Power screen

My INARA profile says Alliance.

I have no idea how you would make it Fed or Imp.

Or why.

It's set manually, because, as noted above, it's not something you can actually do in-game. In Inara, to change it, you click on your profile, then Ranks and Reputation > Reputation, then inside the Powers box, click on "Edit Reputation". One of the options when you do this is to set your "Preferred Allegiance".

Unfortunately, the only four options available to pick from are Fed, Imp, Alliance or Independent. As someone who equally supports the Feds, Imps and Alliance but despises Independents, I''m not entirely sure which one to pick. "Independent" is the default, though if I recall correctly it asks you if you want to change it when you sign up to Inara for the first time.

You can Power Play, for a power-specific aligned personality. Right now Aisling Duval signs a check for me every week.

Sometime, probably next year, I’ll be back in inhabited space, cash those checks, do some work, buy some Prusmatic Shields and move on.

I don’t really care about Space Politics. Federation, Empire, Alliance, Independent, it’s all the same. Only the icons differ.

You can be selective in your allegiances just by choosing who you do missions for/give data to, and who you fight for/against day to day. I never liked the idea of being allied to more than one superpower. So for the past five years since 3300 I’ve worked my way up to Allied with the Federation and Admiral as honorary/auxiliary rank, while to this day I remain only Cordial with the Empire at 23% and still a Serf. I do have some allegiances to a few independent powers but that’s all ultimately to benefit the glory of the Federation.
:)
Forward the Federation!

Empire: Aisling Duval, A. Lavigny-Duval, Zemina Torval, and Denton Patreus
Alliance: Edmund Mahon
Independent: Li Yong-Rui, Yuri Grom, Archon Delaine, and Pranav Antal
Dirty Feds: Zachary Hudson and Felicia Winters
