Please devs add a virtual keyboard to the galaxy map !

I'm using an HOTAS , and playing in VR is awesome, but there is one thing that bugs me out , it' s the fact that you are forced to put down the HMD to type in a system's name in the search box of the galaxy map.
This is an immersion killer for those like me who are away from their keyboard, we need to step away from the commander chair to reach the wired gamer keyboard ( most of them are not wireless ).
Why not to add a virtual keyboard that can be used with a HOTAS , where you can stream letters left or right and validate each of them with a single click from the trigger ?
Please consider that in the future.
:)

As a side component, the Galaxy Map and System Map labels are so far away from the actual 3D object that they are supposed to label, that it is Virtually impossible to tell when you have a system, planet, or station highlighted in Reality.

An exercise in frustration.

Although the two maps are visually stunning, the are functionally useless. Not good for a core component of the game. I am shocked that there are posts about this going on for years...

In answer to netshaman, there are also other posts regarding your request. A google search turns up several. All with the result of: It is up to the HMD developer to do a virtual; KB.

Yeah if FD are going to support VR in ED why not do it properly, being unable to input text easily from within VR is just plain ridiculous.

I agree with the OP as in, the Galmap certainly should have an onscreen keyboard. It would make life a lot easier. Alas FDEV have stated they are not interested in creating one and it's down to Oculus or Steam to add that function to their headsets.

I can't agree with Victim however, the Galmap and Sysmap both work fine in VR if you have your binds configured for HOTAS or gamepad use. If your playing in VR and using keyboard and mouse you're simply doing it wrong. Get a pad or cheap HOTAS. Simple.

As an alternative to waiting for Frontier, Oculus, or Steam VR to add a virtual keyboard, try this instead:

Touch typing is a valuable skill to learn anyways, and once you learn to find homerow by touch, it's much faster and easier than using voice attack and the military alphabet, which is pretty much your only other alternative at this time.

And, of course, make sure you bind controls to operate the galaxy and system map. Both maps are three dimensional, and using a two dimensional device like a mouse is an exercise in frustration.

I played on a friends Playstation 4 some days ago. The PS4 Edition has a virtual keyboard!

Hey frontier, why isn't there a virtual keyboard on the PC?!?

To be fair, he did qualify that his seat is away from his keyboard in his setup. Touch typing is hard to do from across the room. Unless your "Elastic Lad". One could use the same hotas controls for menu operating to select from a VK. Another option for the OP would be to dictate alpha/numerically into the GM using Voice Attack (cumbersome and slow as that is) until and unless fdevs see fit to address this shortcoming. My backlit keyboard and mouse are part of my flight seat and hotas setup so no problem myself. I can just peek down the Rift nose gap and type away. Vive owners would find that more problematic.

Yes, that would be absolutely great, a virtual keyboard for VR. And maybe some kind of switch to get back to the 2D version of the galaxy map. I really hate it sometimes and wished I could properly use my mouse instead to point and klick..

Is it possible to dictate letters via voice attck or complete system names?
Could be a solution for you if it's possible :|

Possible but quite annoying. You wouldn't enjoy that. Speech recognition is bad at best, good luck getting cryptic system names right. And I'm to old for spelling bee either.

A virtual keyboard isn't that difficult. Hey Frontier, let a trainee do the coding. He doesn't cost much and can't make any major errors.

I found an old suggestion and bumped it.

I just tried that solution , it is not really practical as some letters are bad recognised ...
:/
Plus the basic version of voice attack don't have enought commands to implement the 26 letters of the alphabet, it stops at the "T" leltter.

Use the phonetic alphabet for those letters then. And upgrade to the full version. Adapt and overcome.

thats not true at all. however, its not a lie either. the key is, and i cant speak for the rift's built in mic, but even if you have a fancier mic, stick with the built in HMD one. make sure AGC is enabled in windows settings, and if possible, eliminate as many sources of ambient noises as you can. a tv in teh background will destroy voice recognition, and even white noise such as from a fan can severly degrade the recognition. lastly, use windows voice training MORE THAN ONCE. yeah its annoying, but just like it says, the more you use it, the better it gets. for me its a rare occurance when voice attack doesnt register a command, and i use it exclusively for opening all my HUD elements, lights, shield cell use, silent running, and my favorite one, is my voice command for automatically targeting the nearest hostile target. its "HULKAMANIA"

my cousin was visiting, and he had ALOT of questions for my family members after hearing me say "HULKAMANIA" every 50 secounds or so during a combat CG, lol

a small suggestion: since most ships seem to have a keyboard nearby, why not make that swivel arm actually work, and let us manually adjust its position so that it lines up approximately with our real world keyboard. ideally, would like to use a motion controller to grab the virtual keyboard in the ship, and move it around, however thats asking too much, and would alienate non motion controller user base, so i propose a simple selection in options under HUD, that shows "ships keyboard" and values for the x , y, and z axis. the same type of sliders you use for the deadzone settings. then, just have a keybinding that moves the ships keyboard to your configured position, and goes back to being off to the side, like it currently is visually inside the ship, when your done.
