Please Expand and Improve the Codex

Do it for Drew!

I've made a previous suggestion about this to highlight certain individual pilots of outstanding service (nudge nudge), but Drew's really seriously right about one thing: the LORE of Elite Dangerous is feeling a bit thin for how big the galaxy is - even how big the BUBBLE is!

You could've AT LEAST (for example) added "Turning the Wheel" into the "Dark Wheel" entry. But, yeah, I get it, there was one player-driven series that IS in the Codex, and that would be Colonia. But there's so much more going on that feels...ignored, either intentionally or just because the devs are too overwhelmed by the mass quantities of stuff that people are doing.

The stuff Drew's talking about the corporations and their backstories and the like... I feel like they could do so much more than just adding extra codex pages.

Questlines that explore the lore and world of Elite. Maybe when you pledge to a Power there are Power "missions" that explain about their history and things.

The Engineers could offer lore related missions too.

Ram Tah could have a mini campaign around guardians and ultimately guide you through their history and end with unlocking the guardian tech.

Lori Jameson is the great granddaughter of CMDR John Jameson. She could have a bunch of lore missions around the Jameson Crash Site and the history there.

Some of these are oldish in the life of Elite Dangerous and a lot of newer players might not be aware of them. Could be a great way to introduce newer players to this lore as well as pushing them into certain content.

Codex always felt like MVP for a story tbh.

I think Ram Tah has some kind of missions centered around the Guardian Obelisks, but whether or not that goes into the "lore", I have at best hearsay to report on that. Besides for such an exception, the closest we have is GalNet, and if MY efforts are any indicator, there's no glory to be won as far as FDev is concerned. That does not stop me from trying, however.

The logical extreme is "single player campaign", but let's be realistic: they do NOT have THOSE kinds of resources! Still, having a few missions more "hand-written" would absolutely get people to latch on, as they can easily spot them out from the crowd of procedurally generated random tasks, and be like, "Yeah, that's unique...it's instantly high priority!" It doesn't have to be a full blown "single player campaign", just something that's different enough to be special.

Ram Tah has one mission to go and scan 100 different combinations of the guardian data stones for 100M Cr or something. It's a good start, but there is opportunity for a chain of voiced missions where he's recruiting you to go and learn about the Guardians. Video calling you on the comms. Maybe a subset of the 100 lore dumps (which I believe are already in everyone's codex now anyway), then he points you in the direction of the guardian space beacon and then down to the live ruins. A smaller handcrafted set of missions that would allow a player to learn about all of the guardian story without having to read a codex page or watch a youtube video.

It could also tie in to an Engineer's unlockables, maybe a more engaging way of unlocking them and pushing through their tiers...

It's not necessary to have a single player campaign. But even in live service multiplayer games a little bit of story can really help people feel immersed in that world. Warframe has some great "single player" stories. Most MMOs these days essentially have a full single player campaign. I'm not saying that's what Elite needs, but definitely some lore related missions to help explore the vastness. Hand crafted stuff can absolutely exist alongside the billions of procedurally generated stuff.

There is sth like that with one engineer, handing out guardian mission. More of it woul do good, I agree.

These missions are inside the game, just go and dock at a star port in Tah's system and you'll find it (I guess you need to have the engineer unlocked, can't exactly remember, Golden Knight.
