Newcomer / Intro Please fix this game

OK, I've got 50 million in the bank and a fully tricked out ASP explorer and Vulture. I'm expert ranked in combat. I'm a petty officer. The point being that I've played the damn game and I have it figured out. And-I do not know how a game can simultaneously be so brilliant and so stupid. Listen, if there are no rewards for activities what is the point of playing the game? And who dreamed up this ridiculously stupid factional 'Power Play" B.S? What reality is that nonsense based on? What military ranks up its commanders for the amount of propaganda they deliver? Why the hell should I give a damn about the petty politics of every minor faction in every corner of the galaxy? I do not care. I also do not play this game to get embroiled in the made-up politics of some made up galaxy. We have enough problems in reality. Seriously, if it's not modeled on any semblance of the real world and it is a huge cluster**** and pain in the **** for players who exactly thought it was a good idea? Have they ever played a video game before? How about a space sim? I don't recall mindlessly exploring vast stretches of empty space for peanuts in X-Wing Alliance. I don't recall space trucking 50 tons of propaganda to Kashyyyk. THAT game was legendary. This game is a frustrating mess that I just wish worked better because I love the genre and absolutely hate everything that Star Citizen stands for. Please fix this game.

I agree with 10% i.e. the powerplay bit.. other than that should this not be posted somewhere else, its not really newcomers material..

He is not so wrong. Sometimes Elite feels like a game that does not like to be played. The whole game is based on no fair play but if you play it this way you will be blamed for that. It has still to go a long way to become a good game. Fortunately we are still in a very early time of development after a nearly two years so the hope dies last. :)

So what I've taken away from OP is that some people will get mad when a game has lots of content that you can choose to ignore...?

I know right! How dare the devs spend so much time to create lots of content so lots of people can do different things they enjoy!

Forget minor factions exist, forget PP exists, buy yourself a DBS and enjoy the simple pleasure of shooting things. Or an Asp and enjoy the zen of the void. The other content is there so that people that do enjoy PP (trust me, they're there) and the like can do that instead of the zen of exploring, which I find frankly dull as dung.

That's good to know. I've been here sine Premium Beta, and I's still learning new things every time I play.
And-I do not know how a game can simultaneously be so brilliant and so stupid.
This I can agree with 100%. I don't think I've ever played a game that is more infuriating or has left me yelling at the screen more. I've "rage quit" at least 3 times now, but something always draws me back in.
Listen, if there are no rewards for activities what is the point of playing the game? And who dreamed up this ridiculously stupid factional 'Power Play" B.S? What reality is that nonsense based on? What military ranks up its commanders for the amount of propaganda they deliver?
SOme would say you're already reaping the rewards. You've gone from 1000 CR and a loaner Sidewinder to owning an Asp and a Vulture with 50 million in the bank. How are you not getting rewarded? What kind of rewards are you looking for beyond the ability to buy better ships, earn more money and see your name on the "first dicovered by" of a number of star systems?
You get rewarded for Elite by getting access to Shinrata.
You get rewarded for PowerPlay ranking with specialised components and weapons (and bucket loads of cash)

I do agree that PowerPlay is stupid, badly thought out and can be easily ignored. I dabbled for a few weeks, but eventually decided it didn't fit with the way I wanted to play (despite the rewards). But in answer to your question about military rank for delivering propoganda, PP ranks are not equivalent to military ranks, they are more like a political ranking or rising through the ranks of a company, they are a reward for toeing the party line and services rendered to your power. If you claim merits by combat they can also bring Pilot Federation ranks and possibly military ranks.

Then don't get involved. You don't have to, that's the beauty of open world game play. If you don't want to be involved, then you just potter off and do your own thing. That's what I do. I make my way around the galaxy, trading a little, fighting a little and generally having a good time. If I want to dabble in polotics then I do, but nothing is forcing you to.
Have they ever played a video game before? How about a space sim? I don't recall mindlessly exploring vast stretches of empty space for peanuts in X-Wing Alliance. I don't recall space trucking 50 tons of propaganda to Kashyyyk. THAT game was legendary.
Therin lies the difference. X-Wing was a game, in a small game universe that everyone knw all about from the films, books and previous games. You didn't have a huge universe to explore, you got given something to do, you flew there and did it, then you got given the next thing to do. If you want to play Elite that way, then become a mission runner, but in truth Elite is not really a game in the vein of X-Wing, Tie Fighter or Wing Commander, it's more of a space sim, and space is big. Mind bogglingly big.
The Milky way is barely explored... Humans have settled a tiny portion of it in a bubble around Sol, the rest is a vast unknown. Is it empty? We don't know, but we all suspect (and fear) not. But again, no-one is forcing you to explore the vast swathes of emptiness. Personally I like the idea of setting out into the Black looking for new systems to get my name on, but I know exploration isn't for everyone.
As for Legendary, there would have been no X-Wing if it wasn't for the original Elite, that was the legend that began it all.
This game is a frustrating mess that I just wish worked better because I love the genre and absolutely hate everything that Star Citizen stands for. Please fix this game.
There are certainly bugs that need fixing, and Elite has it's issues, but once it gets its claws into you, you just keep coming back for more, even though you don't know why. If Star Citizen can end up 1/10th the game that Elite is (assuming it EVER gets beyond the current Aplha state), then it, too, promises to be amazing. All I can say, is:
"Welcome to the club of players who love this game for reasons they can't understand, but who equally hate it for reasons they can't understand, and who can't walk away from it for all those reasons. Elite isn't a game, it's a way of life."

I've paragraphed your post and numbered the points you make for simplicity when answering.

1) Powerplay does reward you copiously up to 50mil credits per week and access to money can't buy weapons/modules.
2) Well you arn't technically in that military, your a privateer flying their flag. Do more stuff, become a reliable ally to them and they give you more access to stuff and more funds for your privateering. If you go off doing your own thing for weeks-months they arn't going to let you walk back onto their super secret base and take their rocket designs and mountains of cash.
2a) You don't have to do cargo hauling, most powerplay can also be done by killing enemy ships in your factions space or others to defend/attack their influence.
3) Powerplay isn't compulsory but it is the politics bit for the game. Its the players way to influence the factions and public figures vying for political control within their superpower. If you don't want to play politics don't do powerplay.
4) Yes, they made the worlds first 3D space game that sold 1 copy of the game for every single console that was sold. The original game was called Elite made by David Braben OBE in his teens. <- Source - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpWoF5uVgbA

Tl: dr - You don't understand powerplay and are asking for a fix when the problems you speak of are already fixed as above. Ignore powerplay if you don't want politics.
You mix up reality and fiction at one point you want the game to be real and at another saying realism is the worst thing ever, please be consistent :)

Just ignore Power Play - there you are - game fixed. Maybe its not the game that needs fixing ?

Elite is as legendary as games get. If you don't like it then there is a VERY simple solution - don't play it.

"Have they ever played a video game before? How about a space sim?"

To answer point (4).

The original '84 Elite inspired a generation:

Grand Theft Auto was one of several games that was inspired by Elite:
Gary Penn, creative director of DMA at the time cited Elite as a major influence, "But I'd been working on Frontier, which is very different and there were definitely other people on the team who had things like Syndicate, Mercenary and Elite very much in their minds as well. That combination definitely led to the more open plan structure there is now. The game as it stands now is basically Elite in a city, but without quite the same sense of taking on the jobs.

Slightly off-topic but the '93 version of Elite (Frontier: Elite II) first had a planet called Eden orbiting Proxima Centauri. (It's also in E: D).
Alpha%20C%20E2_zpsa4lhmq89.png~original
In August 2016 the ESO (European Southern Observatory) discover an exoplanet orbiting Proxima Centauri. Coincidence or alien conspiracy?[alien]

In Elite lore this planet was discovered in 2038:
Eden was the first planet on which liquid water was detected by spectroscopic methods in 2038, and so it was a major driving force for the exploration of space. However, Eden turned out to be extremely inhospitable with the added danger of hard radiation from Proxima. There is now a small research station on Eden, but little else in the rest of the system.

There is a lot in ED that just a little common sense and respect for the genre as it evolved, as well as respect for the players, could have made much better. I agree that the base game is absolutely brilliant, its after that the trouble starts :)

OK, cute. Now I spend my time taking robotics to Obotrima all week to find out I have to go there to pick up my money for doing so, and this place is under blockade by a bunch of deadlies that interdict me all over the place. Cute. Really. This is the kind of experience that people really pay the big bucks for. What do you think the odds are of me ever participating in a community goal again? IF I had not JUST purchased and outfitted a Python last night I would be going to Star Citizen today no matter how much I despise what they have done.

Well, you could always just stick around until you can claim your reward.

Or, go to Solo mode, fly to the station, claim reward, fly away, then log back into Open.

rep for XW Alliance love, but it really was a different sort of game to Elite, more immediate action and no trading etc....then again I would KILL for a modern Star Wars space sim game.

And goodnight. I'm not posting here anymore as anything I say will violate the terms and conditions of the forums.

As for the OP and the response later in the thread, if you look for the problems in games you will always find them. Pick literally any game in the world and there are issues. Also just because it's a problem for you doesn't mean it is exactly what other people want.

(You don't have to go to a CG station to pick up the money.....but just wait. Although by the tone of your posts that will just frustrate you.)

Personally I couldn't care less whether or not you do a CG again. Really.
