OK, I've got 50 million in the bank and a fully tricked out ASP explorer and Vulture. I'm expert ranked in combat. I'm a petty officer. The point being that I've played the damn game and I have it figured out.
That's good to know. I've been here sine Premium Beta, and I's still learning new things every time I play.
And-I do not know how a game can simultaneously be so brilliant and so stupid.
This I can agree with 100%. I don't think I've ever played a game that is more infuriating or has left me yelling at the screen more. I've "rage quit" at least 3 times now, but something always draws me back in.
Listen, if there are no rewards for activities what is the point of playing the game? And who dreamed up this ridiculously stupid factional 'Power Play" B.S? What reality is that nonsense based on? What military ranks up its commanders for the amount of propaganda they deliver?
SOme would say you're already reaping the rewards. You've gone from 1000 CR and a loaner Sidewinder to owning an Asp and a Vulture with 50 million in the bank. How are you not getting rewarded? What kind of rewards are you looking for beyond the ability to buy better ships, earn more money and see your name on the "first dicovered by" of a number of star systems?
You get rewarded for Elite by getting access to Shinrata.
You get rewarded for PowerPlay ranking with specialised components and weapons (and bucket loads of cash)
I do agree that PowerPlay is stupid, badly thought out and can be easily ignored. I dabbled for a few weeks, but eventually decided it didn't fit with the way I wanted to play (despite the rewards). But in answer to your question about military rank for delivering propoganda, PP ranks are not equivalent to military ranks, they are more like a political ranking or rising through the ranks of a company, they are a reward for toeing the party line and services rendered to your power. If you claim merits by combat they can also bring Pilot Federation ranks and possibly military ranks.
Why the hell should I give a damn about the petty politics of every minor faction in every corner of the galaxy? I do not care. I also do not play this game to get embroiled in the made-up politics of some made up galaxy. We have enough problems in reality. Seriously, if it's not modeled on any semblance of the real world and it is a huge cluster**** and pain in the **** for players who exactly thought it was a good idea?
Then don't get involved. You don't have to, that's the beauty of open world game play. If you don't want to be involved, then you just potter off and do your own thing. That's what I do. I make my way around the galaxy, trading a little, fighting a little and generally having a good time. If I want to dabble in polotics then I do, but nothing is forcing you to.
Have they ever played a video game before? How about a space sim? I don't recall mindlessly exploring vast stretches of empty space for peanuts in X-Wing Alliance. I don't recall space trucking 50 tons of propaganda to Kashyyyk. THAT game was legendary.
Therin lies the difference. X-Wing was a game, in a small game universe that everyone knw all about from the films, books and previous games. You didn't have a huge universe to explore, you got given something to do, you flew there and did it, then you got given the next thing to do. If you want to play Elite that way, then become a mission runner, but in truth Elite is not really a game in the vein of X-Wing, Tie Fighter or Wing Commander, it's more of a space sim, and space is big. Mind bogglingly big.
The Milky way is barely explored... Humans have settled a tiny portion of it in a bubble around Sol, the rest is a vast unknown. Is it empty? We don't know, but we all suspect (and fear) not. But again, no-one is forcing you to explore the vast swathes of emptiness. Personally I like the idea of setting out into the Black looking for new systems to get my name on, but I know exploration isn't for everyone.
As for Legendary, there would have been no X-Wing if it wasn't for the original Elite, that was the legend that began it all.
This game is a frustrating mess that I just wish worked better because I love the genre and absolutely hate everything that Star Citizen stands for. Please fix this game.
There are certainly bugs that need fixing, and Elite has it's issues, but once it gets its claws into you, you just keep coming back for more, even though you don't know why. If Star Citizen can end up 1/10th the game that Elite is (assuming it EVER gets beyond the current Aplha state), then it, too, promises to be amazing. All I can say, is:
"Welcome to the club of players who love this game for reasons they can't understand, but who equally hate it for reasons they can't understand, and who can't walk away from it for all those reasons. Elite isn't a game, it's a way of life."
