Please help - EDTracker Pro twitching all over the place

Greetings CMDRs
EDTracker Pro was delivered yesterday. When it works in Elite, it's great! However, it often twitches / jerks all over the place. I've watched loads of youtube vids, read the userguide and scoured the internet to try to stop it, but I'm now at a loss.

Before I contact official EDTracker support, I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something obvious.

Here is my settings

Here is what I've tried so far:
  • I've lowered the View Scaling to 1 and increased Smoothing to 99
  • I've re-calibrated 6 times and tried different sensitivity calibration settings
  • I've made sure the device is not near a magnetic source
  • I've charged the battery overnight (just in case)
  • I've checked for firmware updates
  • I've read about Opentrack to see if that fixes it here (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ou-have-EDTracker-make-sure-you-use-OpenTrack). But according to Github, the current release is unstable.

I can post a youtube video if that helps.

Any ideas please?

Thanks CMDRs

Use opentrack 2.2 and see how that goes.
Also, delete the head tracking bindings in the game, it's unnecessary once you use open track as it hooks int other the trackir and freetrack API.

OK thanks. I'll try 2.2 and report back.

If while watching the configuration program, you're seeing the virtual head twitch/move incorrectly, then clearly the issue is with the unit itself, or its configuration.

ps: Using Opentrack is a wise move. 1) It allows you to set reaction graphs so a lot of head movement directly ahead only creates a small movement, but when looking more off dead-ahead, a small movement will generate a bigger movement. Very useful. 2) You also get a 3rd axis added to the game so you can lean your head. 3) There is no ingame mapping. It just detect TrackIR and works. 4) You can use it in any game that uses TrackIR.

Try resetting the gyro bias. Make sure it stays still during the reset.

My EdTracker has fits of twitching and doing this sorts it out.

^^ this. Rule everything else out; when you involve Opentrack *and* the game itself, there's too many variables, so be systematic and start at one end and work your way through.

So, first, just test in the UI or Windows Control Panel. Here is some standard cut-and-paste text that we use in customer queries ;)....

Verifying behaviour
===================
It's very important to rule out any other 3rd party applications when testing, so we ask that you check the operation using the Windows USB game controllers view, in Control Panel. Open up the application and you should see the EDTracker listed as a game controller. Highlight it and click "Properties". On "Settings", click "Reset to Default". Ignore the "Calibrate..." button here - you should *NEVER* calibrate your EDTracker by clicking this Windows USB Game Controllers setting - only calibrate through our GUI software.

On the following "Test" tab you should see an axes display showing X/Y as a cross in a box, and a slider bar for Z.

When moving the device you should see these displays change. Yaw the device left/right should move the cross left/right accordingly, and tipping it up/down (as if pitching your head) should move the cross up/down. Rolling the device left/right (as if tilting your head to the side) should move the Z slider bar.

If these behaviours are working right, then your device is functioning correctly. If your in-game experience is different, the problem is most likely with the game or configuration of 3rd party tools such as Opentrack.

If the movement is apparent in the control panel, but the wrong axes are responding for each movement, then you have the device oriented wrong (maybe upside down) or the incorrect orientation set in the UI.

If you are getting no movement whatsoever on these graphs, check that your scaling values in the UI are at least 1.0 or greater. If that's the case, the device may indeed be faulty; try a restore to factory defaults as a last resort (put the UI into DEV mode using the About menu, then click the RESTORE button that appears on the main window of the GUI). If it still doesn't work, get in touch with us to discuss further.

Thanks for the response EDT!

Here's an update:

  • I've followed your USB checks above - everything looks as it should
  • I also changed the wireless USB dongle to a different USB port, but that didn't make any difference.
  • Checked and set-up opentrack V2.2, unmapped the Elite settings. Made no difference - still jerked about
  • Unplugged my joystick, blutooth and charger USB

NEWS FLASH - I think I might have sussed it! Whilst watching my head moving about on the EDT UI for I've just noticed that the wireless icon is randomly dropping from 3 to 1 bar signal strength, I'm getting a red exclamation mark and the connection is dropping. When it does, my head jitters around all over the place.

I've tried taking the wireless dongle out and putting it into a different USB slot. Made no difference.

Faulty unit perhaps?

Is there anything obstructing the line of sight between your head and the USB reciever?

I'm not sure how ED tracker works but if its similar to TrackIR then just make sure you haven't got a window behind you as this causes jumping around on TIR. Obviously if your still getting this problem in the evening when its dark then this post is absolute nonsense and should be ignored =)

Yeah, my computer is on the floor behind my desk and the USBs are at the back. I guess the signal is getting obstructed. I'll go out later and buy a USB extension and put the dongle on my desk!

Thanks all for all your help and thanks too Brumster for your response.

I'll come back with a (hopefully) final update later.

Probably more likely wireless channel selection/noise.... in your investigations, try changing the channel to something else. You may be sharing the channel with other wireless devices in the area, which is affecting it.

I don't own one, but common fault finding applies. Is this the wired or wireless unit?

Either way. Shut down all of your programs. Then shut down your PC. Unplug it for a minute. This kills off any info in RAM that may be interfering. Start up and try the unit after. If you still have issues things to look out for are:

-interference. If wireless, can you change the channel on the unit to something else? If not, do you have home Wifi? Change the channel to something else. If Chan 1 go to 11 for example.

With more info I can give you better advice.

Sorry this has the hallmark of voodoo thinking. If the machine has been rebooted this has been done... Unplugging a PC for a minute will not magically achieve more.

This is a logical thing to try. No so voodoo :)

Especially as the poster has mentioned he thinks the channel is dropping.

As I've already bought the USB extension cable, I'm keeping the USB wireless dongle on my desk (NeilF - my voodoo solution!). However, it seems Brumster is right; it was a channel conflict. I've changed EDT channel to "2". I spent 2 hours playing Elite with EDT Pro last night without any problems, jitters, skittish behaviour or anything untoward.

Just to finish off, I've spent a few months looking at ways to improve my Elite experience. I got a HOTAS, and looked into "more immersion" (VR, Tobii Eye 4C, Track IR and ED Tracker). I discussed getting VR with my wife and she wouldn't be too happy if I cocooned myself away. Initial impressions of ED Tracker Pro? Fantastic. I'm very impressed. Being able to control my ship independently of where I'm looking adds a lot of immersion and enjoyment. Well worth £70. Now I know the device works, I'll try opentrack again.

<Contemplates> Now, do I get rudder petals next....

Thanks to everyone for your help and thanks too to you Brumster for a great product, brilliant youtube vids and excellent support.

Opentrack extends the experience immeasurably. The ability to tilt your head doesn't just give you that deliberate motion, it also makes the head movement a LOT more natural in normal movements and you'll notice it immediately, we inherently tilt our heads when we turn our heads left and right and when that is displayed in game everything appears much more fluid.

Perfect... A wireless conflict seemed one of the most likely reasons... Well done for sorting it out ;)

Do use Opentrack!

Here's my mappings incase they help...

Note: With the roll (lean) there's a bit of "give" so you have to lean a bit before it does anything...
