Please help me find best bang for bucks CPU etc

Finally got everything all set up. New RAM, fresh install.

Love it!!!!

I am still getting ATW / ASW whatever Oculus calls it in the station but even that feel strangely smoother! Placebo?
...
Super smooth though!

Not placebo - the ASW is calculated for the most part on the CPU as well so the less latency these additional frames have the smoother the experience...

I see you took some mid range RAM at a reasonable price. Now that everything is up and running you should make sure the memory settings are optimized and CAS Latency is set to minimum nano seconds.
For anybody else looking into RAM for Ryzen I'd recommend a product search like this .... CAS Latency in ~8.x ns

In the end the goal is to have sharpest timings in ns while upping the RAM clock as much as possible. That will further smooth out experience because of minimal delays in processing and can bring todays Ryzens up par with costly Intels.
This table in the 2nd sheet can help you to calculate the combinations... rule of thumb rather 1CL less than 100MHz more on RAM....
Good to see somebody else confirmed 6 cores is the bare minimum... I'm sure the AM4 socket will see affordable many cores in upcoming months for easy upgrades.

Everyone will have a view. Me too.

I say:

- i7 is highly desirable (almost required) for VR.
- Any model that has 6 cores (2 extra cores makes a big difference).
- A plus if clockable, but not a deal breaker.

I used my i5 2500k with AMD fury for a long time using my oculus rift. It preformed pretty well, but I did have it overclocked to about 4.8ghz.

Now I have an i5 8600k over clocked to about 4.3ghz. Was perfectly fine for VR purposes. Now waiting for a new GPU to run my Pimax 5k+ on it as I know my AMD fury won't be good enough. The CPU will be fine though.

GPU maxed out at 79% and CPU cores were at worst 50% with most around 30%. :)

Now gonna test on AC and PCar2. The real reason I bought this bad boy.

Edit
PCars and AC similar story
GPU 90% and CPU kinda all over the place but never once 100% :) In AC one of the cores had a bunch of peaks and troughs and some of the peaks looked close to 100%.
Super smooth though!

Glad you are happy with your purchase! It isn't Placebo, the CPU just makes a lot more difference than conventional wisdom suggests it should.

Where did you buy the duff RAM stick from? I'll be very disappointed if it was from Scan?
