Please help this stupid explorer find some jump mats in the black (EDO)

IIRC Niobium is more often found in (metallic) Outcrops (which in EDH are quite common inside craters with central mound, usually on upper slopes). I do shoot pretty much all rocks I encounter, as any material that's present on a planet, can be found in any shootable rock. Of course the rarer elements are easier to find in Mesosiderite - (metallic) Outcrop - Metallic Meteorite line of rocks.

Sorry I keep iterating EDH (3.8) experiences, but that's the version of which I know something about, and what I've read, the better version for surface material gathering. I hope FDEV haven't messed spawns up too much in EDO, so that experience isn't totally wasted on it...

only a need to relog if there are no meteorites showing
and if they take too long to re-appear, then maybe a relog might help

and look for all meteorites and break them open

even though metallic may seem to be like an HGE, its not always what you want

the % you see in the system map means a material is here.

even though a metallic tends to give greater amount of the most valuable, it is not always the case

as an example, selenium is hard to find for most cmdrs
yet on a depleted reserves(means nothing) body you can find it in almost every rock
another cmdr can spend weeks on that same body and never see any.

the important thing is to try, that means break apart every type of meteorite
once you have done this to a specific body enough times you will know any mat can be in any meteorite
but on this specific body, it works like this...
then you can write a note for that body being useless or useful

any luck yet?
I tried some of your recommended suggestions and learned a bunch about the wave scanner.

BUT

Even with your tips, I still think EDO has made finding resources incredibly frustrating. In their effort to prevent easy mat farming in the bubble, FDev have made it unduly punishing to explorers. It's not reasonable.

Over the span of a few days, I was able to snag some Niobium (~15) which helped give me a buffer but it's still not enough.

Honestly, this engineer-unlocking jaunt about 6000LY out to some fringe areas has made me depressed about actually going further out in the black. I'm not excited about the galactic core. I don't care about systems separated by a measly 10-15LY. Conversely, what's the point in checking the fringes if I have to waste hours of planetside grinding just to make a few jumps? It's silly. I don't even know if I want to be an explorer anymore. These thoughts are the main reason I only logged in once the past few weeks.

can you not go into Horizons?

only metallic meteorites spawn in groups of 3, but not all the time

as for how many rocks you may have to break, that really depends on the rng of that body
I rarely pick a body for the high percentages
I pick according to gravity and temp. I prefer icy because I have found that more garbage % bodies that are icy seem to spawn a lot of metallic meteorites alone or in groups of 3

I try to go to bodies where the items I want are the only things in the lowest end of the list

that aside, each body has its own rng factor, so some identical bodies the rng will determine if either are any good or better than the other.
as it is a part of a bodies equation for stuff... it is always there

none of that seems to be your problem though.

like I said before too, if you do not find some meteorites within a timeframe you set, like 15 minutes...then relog
you have to see some signs on the sonar or by audio usually in well under 5 minutes

reclogging creates a new instance with new rng factors for your game.
it can easily be a crap instance over and over.

I have friends that never get any good rng in the game..

if that doesn't work
get back in your ship and move and try again, or go to another body or system

and as for jumponium, I have it to make sure I never get stuck.
it takes some time without a material trader to get some of the rare materials.

if I were you though, I would be picking up everything
if for no other reason than giving EDO time to generate more rocks within your range.
and practice
the more you hear the sounds the rocks + sonar make , the faster you can center in on them.
if you can, you could go into settings for audio and make it so the engine noise is less bothersome
then you can hear the sonar better, or turn it up.

I'd recommend once you get back in the bubble that you wing up with another cmdr, it doubles the odds for each cmdr in a wing

I use horizons..
the number of times I see rocks in both versions is similar, for me. the big difference though in EDO is it takes longer for new ones to show up
so much that it bores me, so I go to bed, or switch to Horizons....

Conversely, what's the point in checking the fringes if I have to waste hours of planetside grinding just to make a few jumps? It's silly. I don't even know if I want to be an explorer anymore.

Why do you need to spend hours of planetside grinding to make a few jumps, you know you don't need jumponium to jump right? I've traveled 6kly in the last few days and not used jumponium once. Also, exploring is not for everybody, that's fine, but it does appear you are making it harder than it needs to be.
